Thameside Quilters generous donations to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Shirley McBreen and her team, the Thameside Quilter, have been crafting quilts for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at ASPH since 1998 and recently provided four quilts, beautifully made by Jacquie Cranfield, for a set of quads who were born here on Wednesday 11 July 2018, three girls and one boy. The first quads born at St Peter’s for twenty five years!

The quilts are provided every year to NICU for long term patients to choose one to take home as a keep sake.

Jo Willard, Family Support Coordinator at Ashford and St Peter’s said: “As a unit we are very grateful to receive these quilts. They bring such joy to our parents, they are able to choose a colour for their babies’ cots and use as a keep sake of their time here on NICU.”

Victory Field - much loved by footballers, families, tennis and basketball players skateboarders and dog walkers alike – has received a huge boost, thanks to the refurbished pavilion.

At no cost to the Council taxpayer – funded by developers’ Section 106 contributions, the pavilion has benefitted from a £200,000 reconfiguration and upgrade. This is the biggest project undertaken by Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Council this year.

Action was vital as the former building didn’t meet current safe-guarding standards: There was no lobby between the showers and the outside doors, the windows, doors, flooring and insulation were inadequate, sanitary wear was out-dated and there was no hot water.

Now, post upgrade, park users will have daily use of the accessible toilet, as requested. Also new, is a community room for clubs and meetings, equipped with table and chairs. The room is big enough for 12 to 15 standing people. Facilities even include a kitchenette - which may encourage a refreshments ‘kiosk’, to make any visit to the park complete!

Visually, the pavilion is now an asset to the Field, with its attractive wooden cladding, smart windows and doors and user-friendly look.

On Thursday 12th July, Charters School in Sunningdale hosted their annual Sports Presentation Evening, an event that recognises the dedication and sporting achievements of students throughout the school.

Ascot Fire Brigade Trust, who have a long-standing relationship with the school, once again awarded four £1000 bursaries to talented athletes to support their sporting careers.  These awards make a huge difference and this year went to Lucy Dodwell-Bennett, Myers Amoo Gottfried, Calum Johnstone and Milan Sevic.

NK Fitness also award two bursaries as they are keen to expose young athletes to the strength and conditioning support that has historically been the preserve of elite pathways. This year the support was given to Sienna Rutherford and Toby Jackson.

The younger pupils at Papplewick were entertained on Monday, 12th November when children’s author Laura James came to the school to talk to them about her books.

Laura was sure of the boys' attention right from the beginning when she gave them a selection of cowboy and pirate hats, sheriff badges and bandanas to wear – all of which feature in her stories of Pug.

After Laura had introduced the boys to two of her characters, Pug and Fabio, she read excerpts from her books. Probably the best part of the morning for the boys was when she asked them to think of creating their own characters for a mystery book. Headmaster Tom Bunbury said: “The results were certainly different - we had a hamster called Whizz who was in danger of being eaten by Archie the elephant but was saved by Bruno the detective!”

On Thursday July 12th, Charters School in Sunningdale welcomed Mrs Barbara Hamilton from The Arts Society, Englemere, as a special guest when a new mural to celebrate the school’s 60th birthday was unveiled.

The abstract images, which feature on the 42 boards of the mural, were created by stencils that were inspired by the angles of the school buildings. Students in years 7, 8 and 9 who had demonstrated excellent ability during art lessons were chosen to work on the project, selecting their own colour combinations to create the canvases. Once complete, words from the school’s ‘Unity, Respect, Excellence’ motto were stencilled across some of the canvases, which are hung in the main stairwell of the school.
