Flu campaign begins across East Berkshire to target those who are eligible for the free vaccination | Commissioners in East Berkshire have launched their annual fight against flu working closely with partners, GPs and other health professionals.

Whilst we have been particularly spoilt with fabulous weather this year, the colder months are not too far away, thus it is important that we all take relevant steps to help keep well this winter.

Flu occurs every year and is a highly infectious disease with symptoms that come on very quickly. Having your flu vaccination can help protect you and others.

Some people are more susceptible to the effects of flu. For them, it can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, or can make existing conditions worse. In the worst case, flu can result in a hospital stay or even death.

The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having the vaccination before the flu season starts which is usually around December time

The flu vaccination is available free on the NHS for various groups and individuals that could be particularly vulnerable to complications.

This year, the following are eligible for the free flu vaccination:

At Papplewick’s School’s popular Macmillan Coffee Morning on Saturday, 8th September, a mountain of cakes, samosas and homemade breads had boys and their parents salivating. The colourful fare soon sold out, leaving only crumbs and a lonely-looking doughnut, which was quickly snaffled by a passing Papplewick boarder.

The event was a staggering success and raised a whopping £1,009. This will allow Macmillan to pay for 36 nurses to spend an hour each helping people and their families living with cancer receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.

Headmaster Tom Bunbury said: “Heartfelt thanks to everyone who supplied the lovely baked goodies, to those who helped man the stall, and to those who donated so generously. A delicious event!”

County Cup Football Success for Charters Students

Charters School in Sunningdale has dominated this year’s County Cup Football finals.

The under 13’s, 14’s, 15’s and 16’s boys teams all made it through to the final stage of the Berkshire Schools’ FA Cup and three of them were crowned County Champions.

The U13’s team beat Piggott School 2-1 in their final on 2 May, notching up two, 5–nil wins over their opponents on their journey to the final.

The U14’s team played extremely well all season, and had been undefeated since a loss in their first game of the academic year. They lost 4-1 to a very strong Forest team, the game a lot closer than the score line suggests. They created many chances and were unlucky not to convert them.

The U15’s team won 10-0 and 10-1 in the first two rounds of the cup before beating the Maiden Erlegh side 6-0 in the third round. The boys then beat a very physical Windsor Boys team 5-3 in the semi-final before beating Forest 2-0 in the final.

The U16’s team reached the semi-final last year and they went a step further this year, beating a strong Reading Blue Coat side in a close 2-1 win on 10 May. All the players worked extremely hard and showed an outstanding attitude to get the winner in the last 5 minutes of the match.

Mrs Kirstie Hartwell, Curriculum Leader for PE at Charters said, ‘The fact that four of our teams played in the final of the Berkshire County Cup is a real reflection of each student’s commitment to training and the team spirit they demonstrate week after week. I am very proud of all those involved, including the PE staff who arrange training, drive the minibuses to fixtures and are great role models to the students.’
