Creating more secondary school places

The Royal Borough is creating 450 more spaces at ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ secondary schools after cabinet confirmed a series of tenders to expand three schools, on Thursday 27th July.

Charters School, Cox Green School and Newlands Girls’ School have all had programmes of work approved to allow construction to begin on increasing their capacity.

  • Charters School tender is for  £3,343,199 to provide 210 more places. The scheme comprises a new block of 11 general classrooms, two science laboratories and a dining room extension. The work at all three schools will support an increased intake from the academic year beginning in September 2018.

Cllr Natasha Airey, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “We are committed to ensuring the borough has enough school spaces and these investments will allow hundreds more pupils to attend a ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ secondary school.

“Building a borough for everyone means making sure that we help create the homes and infrastructure that residents need and this £30m school expansion programme will ensure that the larger intake of children currently undertaking their primary education will have a secondary school place ready when they need it.”

The  other agreed tenders are for:

  • Cox Green School – £3,681,388 to provide 210 more places. The scheme comprises a new block of nine general classrooms and a re-provided kitchen/dining room, with a number of remodelled classrooms, two of which are science laboratories.
  • Newlands Girls’ School – £776,000 to provide 30 more places. The scheme comprises three extra teaching spaces – two in a double storey linking space, and one in a large courtyard.

In July 2016 cabinet committed £30m to expanding six secondary schools and finance for the projects at Charters and Cox Green has been allocated from this.

The work at Newlands has been allocated from s106 receipts which were ring-fenced solely for use on increasing capacity at the school.

Separate schemes to expand Windsor Boys’ School and Windsor Girls’ School are underway and further tenders to increase capacity at Dedworth Middle School and Furze Platt Senior School are progressing.
