FINAL RECRUITMENT DAY JUNE 10th  | ROYAL FORESTERS OPENING JULY 2018

One of Ascot’s most iconic pubs, The Royal Foresters on London Road, has been acquired by Oakman Inns. Planning permission has been granted in July 2017 and work will begin immediately on work to re open the iconic building as a hotel and restaurant.

The site attracted several bids from property companies who hoped to turn the site, which has been shut since April 2015, into a modern housing development. However, a £3.6 million bid from Oakman Inns secured the future of The Royal Foresters as a pub and the deal was completed on 30th December.

Oakman will be seeking to gain planning permission for a £3.5 million redevelopment that they would hope to start by late spring. They aim to restore the original Arts & Crafts architecture to the southern façade that has become an iconic landmark in Ascot. Conversely the intention is to remove some of the ugly modern extensions and construct more practical and attractive replacements. They also hope to increase the total amount of car parking places whilst retaining the same number of bedrooms and creating a pub of a similar scale to the existing footprint.

Peter Borg-Neal founded Oakman Inns in 2007 when he opened The Akeman in Tring which quickly won an award for outstanding design and conservation work, a development philosophy with which they have become synonymous. Oakman quickly established a new concept of the ‘modern public house’ and is now known for its successful and community-enhancing transformations of both historical and modern buildings into contemporary spaces that have a strong sense of identity and integration within the local areas they serve.

The art scholars of Papplewick School, Ascot,  had the opportunity to do a painting workshop with artist Sadie James, former resident of Sunninghill.

Sadie, who used to assist in the art department, and was also 'Artist in Residence' at Papplewick  before leaving for Australia, painted the wonderful themed murals on the school’s dormitory walls. She now lives in Coral Bay in Australia and is working on her second children's book The Bubble, having had considerable success with her first, The Whale Shark Song.

The boys, aged 12-13 years, painted a canvas in acrylic and thoroughly enjoyed the rewarding experience of working with this talented artist.

Sadie also showed the Papplewick Year 2 boys her animation, which toured around the North West in Western Australia as part of the Gascoyne in May series of festivals.

 Next Open Morning:   Saturday 4th November 2017 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m   Visit:  www.papplewick.org.uk

On Friday 11th November at 11am Charters School in Sunningdale fell silent to mark Remembrance Day.

Staff and students congregated in their Tutor groups on the astro-turf and as the clock struck the hour, Dexter Brown from Year 12 poignantly played the Last Post. The entire school remained silent for two minutes before Dexter broke the silence by playing the Rouse. A wreath of poppies was then laid by two Sixth Form students. As the students returned to lessons, they passed an art installation of poppies clinging to the trees in the school’s central quad

Mr Chris Cook, Subject Leader for History said, “The idea of remembering those that gave their lives for our today still resonates with students despite the passing of 100 years.  Having just learnt about the impact of the Somme it was fitting that the whole school community came together to mark Remembrance Day as a community.”
