Chairman of Rotary Ascot - Andrew Vallance presented trophies, certificates and prizes to the winning teams from the 2017 Sunninghill New Year Wheelbarrow Race, at the Carpenters pub/french restaurant in upper village road, sunninghill.

Race organiser, David Mear,  also thanked the Race sponsors - De Veres, Ascot Racecourse, Strutt and Parker and Maloneys Budgens in Ascot. Organised by Rotary Ascot, 19 teams took part in glorious winter sunshine, raising a significant some of money.  Organisers report that, with 19 teams participating, they should be able to donate another £7,000 to the Ascot & District Day Centre, with a little left for the Rotary Charities.

Papplewick School, Ascot, made their way to the south coast for the annual geography field trip to Dorset to collect primary data required for the students’ projects.

They endured driving rain on the journey but fortunately it held off during the data collection, though there was plenty of mud to make the slopes down to the river Corfe extremely slippery.

The boys collected data at two sites along the river with the aim of answering the hypothesis: ‘The river Corfe will experience the Bradshaw characteristics of a river from source to mouth’. The Bradshaw Model is a theoretical diagram showing the general characteristics a river should display from the start to the end.

Headmaster Tom Bunbury said: “They couldn’t leave without the international boys experiencing the Great British tradition of fish and chips by the sea while trying to ward off the seagulls! Let’s hope the projects the boys produce are as wonderful as the trip.”

See      BRACKNELL FOREST CONSULTATION

Bracknell Forest Council is currently preparing a Comprehensive Local Plan (CLP) for the Borough up to the year 2036.  As part of the CLP the BF Council will need to include a strategy for the level and distribution of development, including housing and economic uses.  The study for Bracknell Forest is called the ‘Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment’ (SHELAA).

Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA)

The purpose of the SHELAA is to identify sites and broad locations and assess their development potential along with their suitability for development and the likelihood and timing of development coming forward (availability, achievability and deliverability).  The SHELAA will provide an evidence base which will enable the identification of sites and locations suitable to inform development needs to be set out in the CLP.  The Council is currently consulting on a final draft methodology for how it has assessed sites, together with the results of the assessment of sites (which are available to view and download, below).

Inclusion of a site in the SHELAA does not mean it will be allocated for development, and does not mean the Council considers it is appropriate for development either now or in the future.  Allocating sites for development is done through the Local Plan process which will allocate the most appropriate sites to meet development needs.

However, there are three local sites in this Consultation, which could result in the building of 900 houses (or units) in the next 15 years - on top of the proposals for Heatherwood and Ascot High Street  - CURRENTLY 700 HOUSES.

The three sites are;
WINK 23 Lavender Park at 59 residential units

WINK 22 Whitmore Bog at 713 residential units and 60 residential institution units

WINL 21 the Brackens at 112 residential units.

On Monday 6th June, Year 7 boys at  Papplewick School , Ascot, accompanied by their teachers, set off early for a geography field trip with a difference.

After a tour of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where the students looked at the sustainable development and environmentally sensitive planning of both the stadiums and the affordable housing, the afternoon was sports-focused.

The boys tried out the Olympic Velodrome, the mountain biking track and the BMX circuit, followed by a swim in the 50-metre Olympic Pool.

“It was incredible for the boys to be able to use these inspirational facilities,” said headmaster Tom Bunbury. “ They even got some dive training from Tom Daley on the high boards beside the pool. Hopefully now they’ve seen the Olympic Park for themselves, the boys can remember the case study for their exams!”

The pupils, teachers, parents and governors of St Francis Catholic Primary School gathered to give a great send off to their departing Headteacher, Jane Gow who has been appointed Vice Principal (Prep) of The Marist School.

Mrs Gow left the South Ascot school at the end of term, after seven years. “It was a lovely day” she said. “Although I am excited by the new challenge it was a wrench to leave St Francis and all the people there. I will have wonderful memories to take with me.”

Stephen Poulston chair of governors, said “Jane has driven improvements in all areas which led to our outstanding judgement at the last OFSTED inspection. Through her leadership we have also become a Teaching School, which together with other local and Diocesan collaborations, has contributed to school improvements not only at St Francis, but in the wider community of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and Portsmouth Diocese.”

One of Mrs Gow’s last tasks was to hand over to her successor. The acting Headteacher will be Mrs Caroline Johnson.
