Charters School in Sunningdale come second in quiz.

Congratulations to Marco Jowett 8H, Henry Allen 9A and Callum Barraclough 10E, who made up the Charters School team at the annual Berkshire Geographical Association Worldwise Quiz which was held at Reading School on Wednesday 18th January. They are seen here with the school mascot Waddington, who was much admired!

The students came joint second out of 28 teams with 124 points, with the eventual winners from Reading School only 2 points ahead. The questions were on topics such as English counties and famous world landmarks from space. The final round on country outlines, with 50 points available, was particularly tense which shows just how close a result this was for our astonishing team.

Our thanks go to the parents who supported the boys so well and to Geography teacher Miss Smith for organising the event at school.

Pictured: Year 4 Papplewick boys dressed in period costume at the gypsy caravan at the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke.

Boys from Papplewick School in Ascot visited the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke on Tuesday, 9th May and looked at exhibitions of Life in Britain in the 1930s.

Year 2 enjoyed a workshop on the history of toys and visited Mrs Beale's Toyshop, where they played tiddly winks, jacks, dominoes, hopscotch, 'Simon Says' and 'Grandpa's Footsteps.' After lunch they had a look around a Victorian classroom.

Year 3 boys enjoyed the old-fashioned toy and sweet shops, where they spotted plenty of things that were similar to today - including Monopoly, toy soldiers, dolls’ houses, Mint Imperials, Cadbury's chocolate and fruit pastilles.

The Penny Farthing in the cycle shop caught their eye; they also practised an air raid drill in the Anderson shelter. They learnt how to sing 'Run, Rabbit, Run' and mottos such as 'Loose lips, sink ships'. None of them had seen old LP records or gramophones before. A number of boys loved the 1970s sitting room and thought it was nicer than their own at home!

Year 4 visited a Victorian street exploring all sorts of shops, a garage, a train station and a tram. At the village green they dressed in period costume for a photo with the gypsy caravan.

This week the Technology Faculty at Charters School in Sunningdale delivery of a 3D printer which will revolutionise the way that students plan, design & create their final products. The printer is able to transform a computer-aided design into a three-dimensional object when successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object. This process allows the students to test their designs at an early stage allowing them to make any adjustments they feel would improve their final design.

Recent changes to state school funding has resulted in the biggest real-terms cuts in a generation. Because of this, Charters School employs a Development Team to source alternative streams of revenue and the purchase of the 3D printer was only made possible because of the kind sponsorship of local company Luxuria Properties Ltd.

Their Director David Rudelhoff visited the school on Tuesday 13 December to meet some of the Sixth Form students who are currently benefitting from the new equipment.
