This week the Technology Faculty at Charters School in Sunningdale delivery of a 3D printer which will revolutionise the way that students plan, design & create their final products. The printer is able to transform a computer-aided design into a three-dimensional object when successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object. This process allows the students to test their designs at an early stage allowing them to make any adjustments they feel would improve their final design.

Recent changes to state school funding has resulted in the biggest real-terms cuts in a generation. Because of this, Charters School employs a Development Team to source alternative streams of revenue and the purchase of the 3D printer was only made possible because of the kind sponsorship of local company Luxuria Properties Ltd.

Their Director David Rudelhoff visited the school on Tuesday 13 December to meet some of the Sixth Form students who are currently benefitting from the new equipment.

David said, “Charters is a wonderful school that provides amazing opportunities for young people.  I wanted to get involved with the school because my daughter Olivia has just started year 7 and I decided the Technology Faculty would be ideal as that fits what we do as a business. Meeting the Sixth Form students today was a pleasure; they have worked hard to learn how to programme the printer and they showed me this in action which has taken them hours to perfect.  Seeing the students so engaged in what they are doing is great and we hope this inspires more students to take these courses and more parents to support the school where possible.”

Sean Cook, who is planning to study Physics with Space Science and Technology at Leicester University next year said, “This equipment allows me to visualise what my final product will look like and enables me to change and develop my design at an early stage.”
