A £1.3 million investment into an improved state-of-the-art CCTV system will help keep residents in the Royal Borough safer.
The new wireless system will be monitored all day, every day, throughout the year, enhancing coverage across the area.
Working alongside Thames Valley Police the new system has been designed to help keep people safe while supporting policing across the borough.
Cllr Carwyn Cox, cabinet member for environmental services (inc. parking), said: “This investment is one of a number of measures we are taking to make our borough safer.
“We want to support the police and partner organisations in protecting our residents, businesses and visitors.
“The existing CCTV system is reaching the end of its serviceable life after more than 20 years and our replacement will be a significant upgrade.”
The investment follows a detailed review of the existing facilities by an external company and fits into wider work to improve public security across the borough.
This new system will enhance preventative measures already taken, including installing CCTV cameras in Hines Meadow, Broadway, Stafferton Way and Victoria Street multi-storey car parks’ stairwells.
Hostile vehicle mitigation barriers in Windsor and a developing strategy to tackle anti-social behaviour in the town centre will also help improve safety.
Superintendent Bhupinder Rai, LPA commander for Windsor and Maidenhead, said: “We have worked with the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead on the new CCTV programme.
“We believe the new system will bring with it increased opportunities for crime prevention and detection. It forms an integral part of our ongoing partnership work to keep those who live in, work in and visit our borough safe.”
The investment will bring improvements to the control room, cameras and infrastructure.
The proposal to begin looking for a provider to create the new system was approved by the Royal Borough’s cabinet earlier this year.
The new wireless CCTV system is expected to be operational by the end of 2018.
