Local girls school St George’s Ascot, celebrated the official opening of its prestigious new Luker building last week.  After a lavish Champagne and Canapés reception on Tuesday 1 March, for parents, friends and donors, the official naming and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on 10 March in the presence of the School Governors and Windsor based Architects, Edginton Spink & Hyne.

The building, named after the school’s Chairman of Governors Edward Luker, is the brainchild of Headmistress Rachel Owens and the product of several years’ planning.   This fabulous new building provides state-of-the-art educational resources and facilities including a library, language laboratory, classrooms and smaller tutorial rooms.

The jewel in the crown of this stunning building is the library, which has already become a hub of learning and research within the school.  The library itself is named after former pupil Elaine Vagliano, who was a part of the French Resistance and aided the Allies in World War Two before being captured, tortured and killed by the Nazis.

School Librarian, Alison Kennedy said ” I feel privileged to be able to develop a space, which not only provides girls with resources, but encourages them to study, research, enquire and develop the skills necessary for university and life beyond St George’s”.

Headmistress Rachel Owens commented “This is a bold and exciting venture for St George’s which will make a tangible difference to the academic life of every girl here. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved”
