It was a very successful day on Saturday 19th January when 55 Charters students took part in the Berkshire Cross Country championships at Newbury Showground.

Despite the cold and wintery weather, it was very pleasing that the Charters School in Sunningdale had 55 runners in the event and that three of their students were individual medallists.

Curriculum Leader of Physical Education at Charters, Mrs Kirstie Hartwell said, “We encourage our students to take part in a variety of Cross Country events and recognise that we have some very talented athletes who also attend local clubs. Both the U15 & U19 Girls were crowned County Team Champions and it is a remarkable achievement that 14 of the students have been selected to represent Berkshire in the South East Schools' Inter-County Cross-Country Championships on 2nd February. I am looking forward to seeing how the students’ progress.”

Individual Bronze medallist Charlie Holden said, “It’s great to be able to do something I love and represent Charters School at the same time”, while Individual Gold medallist Nathalie Camp said, “I was aiming for the top three but I am so pleased that I won. I ran from the front and just wasn’t caught. I am so proud that I will represent Berkshire at the South East Schools’ Championships next month.”

69,979 young people attend boarding school in the UK according to the Independent Schools Council’s (ISC) annual survey on its 1,326 UK member schools1 – but will it offer the stable, caring and safe environment you want for your child? Is academic rigour complemented by a broad range of arts and humanities options -  music, drama, sport – as well an exciting selection of extra-curricular activities?

Marina Gardiner Legge, headmistress at Heathfield School, the Ascot-based independent secondary boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, shares the concerns of parents who want to make the right decision for their child which is why each year her school – rated Excellent by the Independent Schools Inspectorate –runs an annual summer camp programme.

The UK’s only ‘all girls’ programme, its Summer School and Camp offers girls the opportunity to experience boarding school and living away from home within Heathfield’s safe and beautiful tree-lined grounds and to enjoy its excellent modern facilities.

Roads across the Royal Borough will benefit from improvements and investments worth more than £7.7m over the next year. The funds include £2.7m for the annual works programme including resurfacing and an extra £240,000 to repair winter damage.

The rest of the funding will be used to maintain and improve the highway network including bridge maintenance, cycle schemes, verge protection, road markings and more.

Cllr Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for highways, transport and Windsor, said: “We are looking to invest in improving our road network to help keep the Royal Borough moving.

“The funding will improve road surfaces and safety right across the borough with a variety of schemes.

“We are spending £7.7m to improve our road network, this includes both major capital schemes and annual works to improve the hundreds of thousands of journeys made on our roads every year.

“This year’s annual works, worth £2.7m, will restore infrastructure, preventing the need for more expensive works in the future and creating new features including crossings and widened carriageways. It will also launch schemes to boost safety and make cycling easier.

“Additionally we are looking at increasing funding for road repairs in this financial year in response to extreme weather over the winter. This would build on the £1.7m we have already approved for resurfacing.”

The £7.7m is split between £2.7m in the annual works programme and £5m from the previously approved capital works programme.
