Students at  Charters School in Sunningdale  have been raising funds for an ‘Oasis’ STEM garden by eating donuts!

The student Sites and Facilities Council, which is led by Year 13 students Hannah Heitplatz, Myles Kearsley and Hannah Collison, had the ingenious idea of selling the sweet treats each day from the school’s bandstand at second break to raise funds for a new garden at the school. They negotiated a bulk purchase with Sainsbury’s in Bracknell and hope to sell 1000 donuts by the end of the week for £1 each, which will go some way to achieving their £20,000 target.

HALL GROVE SCHOOL JUBILANT AS JABULANI RAISES IN EXCESS OF £15K FOR TANZANIA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Hall Grove School has long been known for instilling in its pupils a sense of community and citizenship driven by a school motto that roughly translates as “do your duty, come what may.”

On Friday 22nd June, that message came to life as the parents supported a fund-raising evening of drinking, feasting and dancing at a traditional Jabulani to raise money for Miwaleni Primary School in rural Tanzania. The project was founded by Hall Grove old boy, Paul Jameson who visited the area and was inspired to raise vital funds for the school after he was diagnosed with MND. Following this diagnosis he began a huge fund raising project to help change the lives the others.

Papplewick boys currently living across thirteen different time zones, have been set various challenges since lockdown was announced back in March, in addition to being remotely taught a full timetable of live lessons for all year groups. An extreme reading challenge proved fun and boys posted photos of themselves reading whilst somersaulting on trampolines, riding pogo stick, high up in trees etc, The latest challenge however has given them their greatest challenge yet since lockdown.  The Race Around the World asked year groups to race each other 'around the earth' with the first team back at Papplewick winning the race not only to keep their fitness levels up but as an interactive challenge. How it works is that with a total of 40,075.00km to complete the race, each year group is given a 'value' of km to walk, run, cycle in their own areas - for instance in year 2 1KM would equal 120kms, whilst in year 81 kms would equal 35 kms. The race started off  'from Papplewick' on Monday 11th May and although it took some time for a few year groups to get going (year 8 boys being still in Bracknell whilst Year 5 had passed the border into Germany!) all teams have now gathered momentum with some huge bike rides and long runs being reported and parents supporting alongside (some on rollerblades !) At the end of last week teams were cruising across Asia, with Years Four and Five and the Staff team in Mongolia, while the others were gathered in central Russia, heading into the weekend. The race ends at the end of this week when the boys, parents and staff can soothe their aching muscles with half term ahead !

On Thursday 15 March, seventeen Year 8 students at  Charters School in Sunningdale, took part in the BBC News School Report. More than a thousand schools across Great Britain take part each year in this day-long event which offers students the opportunity to experience working in a news team: from the early breakfast meeting, when they review the day's top stories; through the writing process, as students undertake research and interviews; and to the final product, when all writing is complete, film footage edited and the stories are sent out to a news-hungry public.

The students tackled a variety of news stories on the day, aiming to provide reports which were interesting, relevant and personal to them.  News teams interviewed staff and their peers in order to add depth and a range of perspectives to their work and as with the real world of news reporting, the students had to keep to a strict deadline.  By 3pm, all news stories were uploaded onto the Charters School Report web page. Their work can be viewed via https://chartersschoolreport.tumblr.com/.
