This year, following the cancellation of exams, grades were awarded through a process of teacher assessed grades, against a national standard and approved and awarded by the exam boards. The government is not publishing performance data for any schools or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic.

Congratulations to all the students who gained the grades they need to progress onto the next stage of their education. 40 students gained straight A*/A grades across all the subjects they took with no student achieving anything less than an E grade across the whole cohort.

Students who studied BTEC qualifications also did very well with a significant number of Distinction and Distinction* outcomes. These outcomes alongside their A level outcomes have enabled them to progress to a range of universities.

Our students are going off to further their studies from Plymouth in the South West to St Andrews in Scotland and Belfast in Northern Ireland. They will be studying courses as varied as their geographic distribution a flavour is below:

Accountancy, Architecture, Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Science, Business, Computer Science, Digital Marketing, Ecology, Economics, Engineering, Fashion Design, Film and TV production, Fine Art, Football Coaching, Forensic Investigation, Game Design, Geography, History, International Relations, Journalism, Law, Liberal Arts, Marketing, Mathematics, Media, Medicine, Neuroscience, Nursing, Performance Design and Film Costume, Pharmacy, Philosophy, PPE, Photography, Physics, Politics, Primary Education, Psychology, Surveying, Sociology, Sport and Exercise Science,  Surf Science and Technology, Theological Studies, Veterinary Science, Zoology.

There are also six students going to Oxford or Cambridge one of which will be studying Medicine. In addition to this, five further students will be studying either Medicine or Veterinary Science at other universities.

Mr John Fletcher, Headteacher at Charters School said, “We are immensely proud of all the work and achievements of our students, especially after such a difficult and disrupted year. They have worked incredibly hard to ensure that they were well prepared for the assessments that took place. Our teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure students are all able to progress onto further education and study, and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.”

Mr Steve Metson, Head of Year 13 said, “The Class of 2021 at Charters deserve huge credit for the fantastic results that have been achieved in such challenging circumstances. I have been incredibly impressed with the way the year group has performed showing such dedication and resilience. We wish every student success as they embark on their exciting futures whether this be at university, an apprenticeship or the world of work and the whole of the Sixth Form team are incredibly proud of everyone’s endeavours.”

Mr Richard Pilgrim, Former Headteacher, said, "Despite the huge challenges that have been faced in recent months, we must remember that today’s results are the culmination of seven years’ work and there have been many outstanding successes of which our students should be very proud. I hope that all our Year 13 students are now able to make plans for their futures. Whilst there has been no examination endorsement of grades, the work ethic and character development that has gone alongside academic study has prepared students well for the next step in their lives and they should feel confident and optimistic.”
