Charters School  in Sunningdale | On Thursday 14th April, Year 10 Music Technology students at Charters School visited 1 Golden Square in London, the home of National radio stations including Absolute, Kiss and Magic, in order to gain an insight into how music technology is used during broadcasts.

During the radio station visit the students were able to see live broadcasts of Absolute, Kiss and Magic FM along with seeing Jamie Laing from 'Made In Chelsea' create a radio recording for Heart Radio. The tour allowed the students to see how an area of the music industry works, how technology is used daily to create a radio show, whilst also giving a flavour of a potential career for them.

The students then visited an anechoic chamber to experience how sound frequencies can be manipulated. The anechoic chamber at UCL is a room suspended on a cushion of air that is designed to reduce the volume of sound inside to less than zero decibels. The students were given the opportunity to go inside the room to experience its unique characteristics and discover how sound frequencies are affected.

Mr Philip Stainton, Music Technology teacher at the school said, “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to see how radio stations create live broadcasts. We have some very talented students studying Music Technology and they all enjoyed the trip.”
