Ascot Sunninghill & Sunningdale Local Election Results| Despite the dramatic election result for the Borough Windsor and Maidenhead as a whole, with the Conservative Leader losing his seat to a 22 year-old LibDem, all the Conservative councillors have been elected in the Ascot & Sunninghill Ward, and the Sunningdale & Cheapside Ward.

The  2023 Sunninghill  Wheelbarrow was held on  May 1st 2023, setting off from the School Road/Upper Village Road Car Park at noon.   A hugely enjoyed community event, raising vital funds for the Ascot Day Centre, it is organised by the Rotary Club of Ascot. 18 teams took part .

The trophies this year were Fastest Mens Team (Ghostbusters), the Fastest Mixed Team (Maya Sunninghill), Fastest Ladies (not awarded this year),   Most Sponsorship raised (tbc) , Best Fancy Dress (Mossy Bottom Barrow) , Best Family Fancy Dress (Roarsome Runners).

The major sponsor this year is Ascot Racecourse , along with Berkeley Homes, Volker Highways, the Marist School , the Carpenters Arms and Duncan Yeardley, and the race raises vital funds for the Ascot District Day Centre.

The aim of the race is for teams of four (men, women, children or mixed) to push a wheelbarrow with one of their number in it, around the marshalled course of just 1 mile.  Along the way there are four stopping points, including three pubs and one other ‘fuelling’ station, where each member drinks either a ½ pint of beer, soft drink or water.

Teams should be given a name and one member must be over 18.  Anyone under 18 is only allowed to participate on the strict understanding that he or she is only allowed to drink soft drinks or water, and identification may be sought by the publicans or marshals.

This is a charity function, organised with the support of the Rotary Club of Ascot, with an entrance fee of only £30 per team , non-refundable – to go towards the sponsorship. Entrants are asked to obtain as much sponsorship as possible, which will form part of the donation to the Ascot District Day Centre.

The Ascot Day Centre has been open 3 days a week since we re-opened after the pandemic. However we’d like to go back to opening 5 days a week, but a shortage of drivers is stopping us.

Our volunteer minibus drivers pick our members up in the morning and drive them home in the afternoon. We are flexible and will work our rota round our volunteer drivers’ availability.

Looking for a few hours of banter in the morning or afternoon? Then give us a call or email.

Bracknell Forest Council is pleased to announce the launch of the Bracknell Forest Innovation Fund, aimed at supporting small community-led projects that can have a big impact on the health and wellbeing of clinically extremely vulnerable (CEV) residents and those closest to them.

The impact of COVID-19 has been felt by everyone, particularly those who were considered CEV. These residents, their families, and carers may still be negatively affected.

On Sunday, 2nd April 2023 we welcomed Ascot United Warriors, a team of footballers aged from 18-39 yrs who are affiliated with Special Olympics GB.  The Ascot Racecourse Supports community programme is sponsoring the kit this season for the players who have learning disabilities including Autism, Downs Syndrome and Dyspraxia. They travel from as far as Farnham, Camberley, Bracknell and Reading for training every Sunday evening at Ascot United FC.

Their first ever competitive match took place on 26th March when they took on St Albans Special Olympic team achieving a 7-5 win, with their Captain scoring 4 wonderful goals; the first from the half-way line!

Donna Molyneux, whose son Brett Edge plays for the team, is the driving force behind the success of the initiative, supported by Ascot United and it’s chairman Simon Negus. The football club also sourced FA funding for coach Jake Perry to help the team for the first season, who travels from West London each Sunday to coach the team.

Donna said, “Jake had not trained adults with special needs before and his calm and encouraging persona has had a huge impact on the team. For the parents of the young men this has been tremendous, as they see their sons now engaging with their peers on and off the field and learning new skills which keep them fit and healthy and give them an avenue to form new friendships. We find that once their educational journey has ended at school, they struggle to gain employment and are often at home alone playing on their computer or watching TV. This team has provided the boys with a purpose. I have seen the confidence grow both in their footballing skills, but perhaps more importantly, their social and emotional skills as they feel safe and comfortable together in this very special team.”
In their honour, we named our 1.50pm race “The Ascot Racecourse Supports Ascot United Warriors Maiden Hurdle” with players given the privilege of picking the best turned out horse alongside presenting trophies to winning connections.

The team are keen for new players to join and if you are male, aged 18+ and have a recognised learning disability, then you would be welcome to come along on a Sunday evening at 5pm to Ascot United. The team are also looking for additional sponsors. For more information, please contact Ascot United directly: jo.gavin@ascotunited.co.uk
