Young people in the Royal Borough will have access to £20,000 to plough into youth funding schemes.

This is the sixth year in a row that the Youth Voice Youth Choice scheme has been run, allowing individuals and youth groups to apply for a slice of the money.

Grants of up to £2,500 are available in four categories – schools, individuals, target groups and youth groups and the winners are decided by an online public vote.

Applicants must live or study in the Royal Borough and be aged between 8 and 19 years (or up to age 25 if they have learning disabilities).

The aim of Youth Voice Youth Choice is to get as many young people as possible to take an active part in their community.

Last year the scheme awarded funding to a number of projects, including the Reach group, which received £1,000 for equipment  for young people with special educational needs or learning/physical difficulties; Family Action Young Carers Service, which received £1,385 to fund a trip to the living rain forest for twenty young people and three adults in the Easter holidays; and Furze Platte Senior School, which was awarded £1,500 for their Maidenhead Cycle Hub.

A fabulous football afternoon for Papplewick boys – and their mums!  | At the annual Boys v. Mums football match for Under 8s at Papplewick School, Ascot, on Tuesday 17th October, the boys could not wait to take on their mums and show off their football skills.

Participants were split into four teams, with every team playing each other in a round robin fixture. The mums were tenacious and full of energy, scoring a number of fine goals. The boys played the better football, but had to move the ball quickly against faster, taller and stronger opponents.

Despite the physical advantage of the mothers, the boys were excellent and played some wonderful football scoring a number of terrific goals to run out 13-8 winners overall.

Headmaster Tom Bunbury said: “This event is always a wonderful afternoon of fun - and a great opportunity for the boys to share a huge part of their everyday Papplewick life with their mums.”

Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals has been shortlisted in the ‘staff engagement’ category of the 2017 HSJ Awards. The awards are one of the largest celebrations of healthcare excellence in the world, recognizing and promoting the finest achievements in the NHS.

Director of Workforce Transformation, Louise McKenzie, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for this award, in recognition of our ‘Be the Change’ and ‘#Rightculture’ programmes. We began these back in 2014 whilst reflecting on lessons learnt from the Francis report; we wanted to transform our culture and improve the feel of the Trust for colleagues.”

“’Be the Change’ was introduced by a group of junior doctors, as a way of enabling any member of staff to put forward suggestions for change and improvement. We created something that broke through traditional hierarchies and empowered people to put their ideas forward. Since then, it’s become an integral part of our approach to quality improvement and we’ve worked hard to equip staff with the knowledge, skills and capability they need to make positive changes.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 22nd November at the Intercontinental O2 in London.

Thames Hospice’s beds are often the last beds patients will ever experience, and the charity is asking you to help them make sure their mattresses are the best and most comfortable mattresses people will ever sleep on.

The palliative and end-of-life care charity has launched the Patient Comfort Appeal in a bid to raise more than £20,000 for specialist mattresses for their most seriously ill patients. All 17 beds on the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit, in Hatch Lane, Windsor, are full almost all of the time - supporting around 500 local people every year. With such high demand for beds, and patients with increasingly complex needs, the charity needs to replace some of its existing mattresses so they can continue to deliver their renowned compassionate care to people in their final days and weeks.

Linda Nelson, Head of Inpatient Services at Thames Hospice, said: “Our team are amongst the most highly trained and experienced palliative care Nurses in the UK. But, we have a problem. Today, I am asking you, on behalf of the whole team, to help us find a solution. We have a limited equipment budget and there simply isn’t the ‘spare’ money available to afford new specialist mattresses.

Charters School  in Sunningdale | On Thursday 26th May, Charters students Claudia Logan, Ava Kirkham, Sital Patel and Sebastian Daniels travelled to Surrey University’s Senate House to take part in the Salters' Chemistry Festival. Their first task was to use their science skills to identify the culprit of a murder. Excellent observations and detective work lead them to the correct conclusion. After lunch, the students took part in a second competition making the colours of the rainbow using acids and alkalis. Again the students excelled and were able to produce all but one of the colours. The day finished with an excellent chemistry demonstration by the lecturers of Surrey University. The students were a credit to the school and showed excellent teamwork and resilience. Well done to all involved.

On Sunday, 17th September, Holy Trinity Church, Sunningdale held a community tea party at the Broomhall Recreation Ground— similar to the carnival — to welcome their new vicar, Reverend Jon Hutchinson, to the parish. There was a really good turn out as the crowd enjoyed bouncy castles, face painting, a Pimms & Beer tent, tea, cakes and refreshments. The Scouts ran a coconut shy,  a second hand bikes stall (lovingly recycled by Geoff Streeter), and a tug of war.

Adam Afriyie, MP for Windsor, and Phillip Bicknell, RBWM Councillor, also presented a £900 cheque to the Sunningdale Scout Group (pictured above), on behalf of Adam and the Parliamentary Club, a group that raises money for Scouts around the country.
