The Creative Arts Faculty at Charters School has built quite a reputation over the past few years with their annual stage shows, and this week the Lower School performed Bugsy Malone over two nights.  Historically the school production has taken place in the autumn term with students in the Upper School taking most of the leading role, but for the first time, the younger students staged a production in the summer term and it did not disappoint. Students in years 7, 8 & 9 sang, danced and acted their way through a fantastic show that kept the audience’s toes tapping from start to finish. The play tells the story of the rise of "Bugsy Malone" and the battle for power between "Fat Sam" and "Dandy Dan" and is set in prohibition era America. The Main Hall was transformed into Fat Sam's speakeasy and there were even ‘Splurge Guns’! The joyous entertainment was a testimony to the hard work, commitment and talent of the large cast, crew and band and the standard of the whole production was remarkable, considering it was performed at the end of a busy term.

On Saturday June 30th, Charters School, Sunningdale , Charters School in Sunningdale celebrated its 60th birthday with a Summer Celebration in its extensive grounds. Gilbert Homes sponsored a marquee in the central grassed area where a great line-up of bands played throughout the day, creating a festival vibe that entertained both young and old. Jewell Windows kindly sponsored the hay bales, which provided the perfect setting to sip a cocktail or eat an ice cream for those who watched the hourly dance shows as the sun shone. Ex-Head Girl, Martha Collison, returned to Charters to judge a Bake-Off style competition which was won by Lauren Rossitor-Kidd in the Showstopper category and Mrs Metson in the Cupcake category; both winners were each presented with a signed copy of one of Martha’s books. Ollie Chell and his team, all of whom left Charters in 2017, won the football tournament and the Class of ’63 did a sterling job staffing the Alumni Hub throughout the event.

Superfast Berkshire is a very ambitious programme initiated in 2013 that is using state aid assistance to give properties in even the most rural areas of Berkshire access to superfast broadband.

To date, Berkshire’s superfast broadband coverage in the Royal Borough has risen to 93.8% with even some of the most rural areas gaining access to superfast broadband coverage, making us one of the most digitally connected rural communities in the UK.

When the Superfast Berkshire phase three contracts were signed in July 2017 with BT Group and Gigaclear we were promised that superfast broadband coverage would exceed 99% across Berkshire by September 2019.

However, due to a lack of engineering capacity in the broadband industry and the rapid expansion of commitments on the relative newcomer Gigaclear both suppliers are unable to meet their original contractual delivery targets in Berkshire.

‘THERE BUT NOT THERE’ WILL BE  HERE, FOR VERY SPECIAL REMEMBRANCE YEAR 2018 in SUNNINGHILL & ASCOT | Sunday November 11th 2018 will be a very important date! It will be 100 years since the WW1 guns fell silent!

The long lists of names on the Parish war memorials are testament to a huge local sacrifice. This has prompted  Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Council  to secure a number of fitting memorials for this special anniversary, from the Registered Charity,  ‘Remembered’ . ‘There But Not There’ is the latter’s WW1 centenary Remembrance campaign, Remembered, which is  currently sweeping the country .

Remembered is marking the Centenary with three clear aims: To commemorate the fallen, to educate (lest we forget!) and to heal (fundraising for those who are still suffering after defending our country).

Four poignant, six-foot silhouette ‘Tommies’ (see picture below) supplied by Remembered, are starting to  appear at significant Sunninghill & Ascot Parish locations. The first is now standing near the door at All Souls Church in South Ascot (see below).  The ghostly soldier image weighs just 11kg and is only 6mm thick. The hollow outline of a man embodies the ‘There But Not There’ message. The Tommy even wears a poppy, for Remembrance Sunday.

A key Tommy will stand beside the newly refurbished Victory Field pavilion – (the biggest project the Parish Council is undertaking this year).   Up in the Field, on the top bank, there will also be a memorial lectern, bearing an explanatory panel about the Field’s origins. It will be next to a very attractive bench. Both bench and lectern are the same thought-provoking, poppy design (pictured below)...
