A team of students from Charters School in Sunningdale has overcome challenging market conditions to become the November winners of the Student Investor Challenge.

Run by The London Institute of Banking & Finance, the competition involves teams investing virtual money on the London Stock Exchange.

Cameron Ross, James Crooks, Megan Willson-Rymer and Yo Yo Chang, triumphed throughout November in the national competition, growing their virtual £100,000 portfolio by nearly £6,000. The team has secured an opening prize of £100 and now stands a good chance of making the semi-final stage, with the best eight performing teams then competing for a chance to win a trip to New York City.

The Student Investor Challenge is the largest competition of its kind for schools and colleges in the UK with more than 40,000 students taking part each year.

Yo Yo said, “The key to success is knowing what the markets are doing. This is a great experience and I am really enjoying it.”

Boys from Papplewick School in Ascot visited the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke on Tuesday, 9th May and looked at exhibitions of Life in Britain in the 1930s.

Year 2 enjoyed a workshop on the history of toys and visited Mrs Beale's Toyshop, where they played tiddly winks, jacks, dominoes, hopscotch, 'Simon Says' and 'Grandpa's Footsteps.' After lunch they had a look around a Victorian classroom.

Year 3 boys enjoyed the old-fashioned toy and sweet shops, where they spotted plenty of things that were similar to today - including Monopoly, toy soldiers, dolls’ houses, Mint Imperials, Cadbury's chocolate and fruit pastilles.

The Penny Farthing in the cycle shop caught their eye; they also practised an air raid drill in the Anderson shelter. They learnt how to sing 'Run, Rabbit, Run' and mottos such as 'Loose lips, sink ships'. None of them had seen old LP records or gramophones before. A number of boys loved the 1970s sitting room and thought it was nicer than their own at home!

Year 4 visited a Victorian street exploring all sorts of shops, a garage, a train station and a tram. At the village green they dressed in period costume for a photo with the gypsy caravan.

This week the Technology Faculty at Charters School in Sunningdale delivery of a 3D printer which will revolutionise the way that students plan, design & create their final products. The printer is able to transform a computer-aided design into a three-dimensional object when successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object. This process allows the students to test their designs at an early stage allowing them to make any adjustments they feel would improve their final design.

Recent changes to state school funding has resulted in the biggest real-terms cuts in a generation. Because of this, Charters School employs a Development Team to source alternative streams of revenue and the purchase of the 3D printer was only made possible because of the kind sponsorship of local company Luxuria Properties Ltd.

Their Director David Rudelhoff visited the school on Tuesday 13 December to meet some of the Sixth Form students who are currently benefitting from the new equipment.

20 years ago, in the Spring of 1997 a local Mum was looking for that certain job that meant she could work school hours as her son James, then aged 5 was starting the Summer Term at Binfield C of E Primary School.  That Mum was Jackie Thornton who luckily discovered a job that turned out to be life changing.  She discovered Jo Jingles, specialising in Music, Singing and Movement who were looking for a new Franchisee in the local area.  Jackie bought the Franchise and went from strength to strength.  Over the last 20 years Jackie and her wonderful class teachers have introduced Under 5s to a world of music and fun, with the emphasis firmly on “fun” and thousands of youngsters in this area will have become Jinglers at some time.
