On Thursday 11th November,  Charters School  in Sunningdale fell silent to mark Remembrance Day.

Standing in year groups, the entire school joined together to remember the nation’s service men and women who have died in the line of duty.   Poems were read by the Head Boy and Girl, before the Last Post was played. Students and staff fell silent for two minutes before the silence was broken by the playing of the Rouse. A wreath of poppies was then laid by two Sixth Form students. As the students returned to lessons, they passed an art installation of a giant poppy, which was created from patchwork squares of material.

After the service, the wreath was moved to the foot of the school’s Tree of Remembrance; an English Oak tree that was donated to the school by Hillier Garden Centre to mark the centenary of the Great War in 2018.

Mr John Fletcher, Headteacher at Charters School said, ‘Taking time to reflect on the sacrifice of armed service personal and their families is extremely important.  The whole school community coming together in this act of remembrance is incredibly powerful and moving.’

Head of History, Mr Espensen said, ‘It was wonderful to see the entire school community gathered in one place for the first time in two years. All the students conducted themselves brilliantly during the ceremony, but a special mention is needed for Daniel who played three pieces on the trumpet perfectly, as well as Kaya and Molly who provided fantastic poetry readings. Their contributions lent weight to the already immense impact to the two minutes silence and gave everyone present the opportunity to reflect on the sentiment of the occasion. The school motto of ‘Unity, Respect and Excellence’ was certainly realised today, and our school was proud to take part in such an important national event.’
