ASPH Trust transforms training through Virtual Reality and Innovation  | Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the first hospitals in Surrey to launch a Virtual Reality (VR) training and education resource.

Our vision is to provide an outstanding experience and the best outcome for patients and the community we serve. At the heart of this lies our strategy to develop the Trust as a centre of training excellence, which has been accelerated by the new ways of working that were adopted during the pandemic. As well as creating new collaborative models and training tools, the Clinical Education team have expanded their simulated education facilities by installing a fully immersive Simulation multi-room suite within the Education Centre at the St Peter’s site. In doing so it has becoming one the first hospitals in Surrey to upgrade to this world-class facility.

This innovative equipment allows the user to experience and respond to real-life situations in a safe and educative environment. At the touch of a button, users can be transported to a variety of settings with 360° imaging within the suite providing an all-round multi-sensory experience for learning. Users can be trained to prepare for real life emergencies including scenes of  road traffic accidents, operating theatres, or on the London underground, just to name a few.

Not only has this revolutionised the way we can offer our simulated education to healthcare workers, it has opened up a whole world of considerations of how we could use it as part of staff wellbeing, patient rehabilitation, a sensory stimulus or how it can be shared with our local community such as with schools and our partners including ambulance and local GP services.

Suzanne Rankin, Chief Executive at Ashford and St Peter’s, said: “I am so excited about our ambition to become the centre of training excellence and this is one of the key milestones in that journey. Installing this world-class equipment will enable current and future generations to receive outstanding training as well as benefiting the wellbeing of our patients and the community.”
