Charters School in Sunningdale is raising funds to relocate its long and triple jump pit after damage was found in the existing facility. Tree roots have led to damage to the runway and pit, meaning that students at the school will not be able to take part in the two sports during the forthcoming athletics season.

Mr Wales, Head of PE at the school said, “Charters has a long tradition of introducing students into lifelong physical activity and sport through our excellent facilities. Unfortunately, we have been advised that the long & triple jump facility needs to be completely replaced. This is a huge loss to the school as long and triple jump are taught to all year groups in the PE curriculum and at least 50-60 students take part in these events each week in after-school clubs. Many students join Athletics clubs because of their positive experiences in PE lessons and we are proud that we play a part in this progression.”

Initial quotes to replace the runway and pit are in excess of £30,000 and the school is launching the “Charters to Tokyo” Fundraising Event to help fund the new facility. Students at Charters will be sponsored to run or walk the distance from Charters to Tokyo, which at 9,611 kilometres is no mean feat! Students will complete as many laps of the field as they can during their lessons and their laps will be recorded and converted into kilometres. It is hoped that by the time the Tokyo Olympics begins, the students will have covered the distance and raised sponsorship to go towards the required work. The school is looking forward to seeing which Tutor group, Year Group and House cover the largest distance once their totals have been combined.

Anyone wishing to donate funds towards the new long and triple jump facility can use the QR code below to donate directly through the school’s CAF Donate page. Every donation is valued and donors who are UK taxpayers can also sign up for Gift Aid, which allows the school to claim an additional 25% from the government.
