St George’s is a thriving independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, offering an ambitious, connected and future-facing education. Awarded ‘excellent’ in its November 2022 ISI inspection, the report speaks of young women who ‘demonstrate healthy self-knowledge, well developed study skills, first-class social skills and an awareness of the world around them.’

The St George’s ethos, and education, focuses on developing Confident, Capable and Connected young women who are thoroughly prepared for the world beyond school. Learning in an all-girls environment fosters confidence as girls are emboldened to innovate, lead and express informed views free from gender stereotypes. They are, as a recent Head Girl explained, at ‘the centre of their own story’ throughout their time at the school. They grow in capability as they are exposed to a wide range of opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom, developing excellence in academic, sporting, musical, dramatic and creative pursuits. Throughout their time at St George’s pupils are encouraged to connect inwardly and across the diverse school community but also with the world around them and so they develop a strong sense of what they want to bring to and how they will challenge the society they will ultimately join.

Pupils enjoy facilities that ‘might easily belong to a school three times the size’ (2023 Good School’s Guide review), and yet the school is small enough to develop markedly strong relationships across the community. Each pupil is individually known and supported by a close network of teaching and pastoral staff who help shape and develop individual capabilities and aspirations. Examination results are excellent with regular Oxbridge success, a high percentage attending Russell Group universities and a strong number of girls choosing post-18 options in the Arts in courses ranging from visual effects, fine art, textiles and fashion to photography. The most recent value added figure for the school at GCSE placed St George’s 7th out of 344 schools using a Cambridge University measure and 71% of the 2022 Upper Sixth achieved A*-B at A Level.

During 2022, St George’s was shortlisted for a number of industry awards and chosen as a finalist in the prestigious Tes awards’ category for Innovative Learning. After a demanding application process, the school was also recently awarded Google for Education Reference School status as a mark of the tremendous work that has been done to integrate technology in the classroom and innovate teaching methodology in collaboration with Google Education. The History Department was also proud to have been awarded the Historical Association’s Gold Quality Mark with assessors noting the department’s ‘strong desire to become a centre of excellence for the transformation of history education.’

Pupils benefit from a sizable and diverse co-curricular programme with over 70 clubs on offer through the ‘working week’ for the girls to enjoy. With sports clubs in abundance, a Gardening Club, the SGA ‘Googley’ Google Diploma Club, Amnesty International, a Cultural Diversity Club and Model United Nations on the list, there is plenty to spark the girls' interest. The recent ISI inspection acknowledged the ‘school leaders’ deliberate policy for every girl to be involved in some extracurricular activity every day’ leading to the ‘fulfilment of the school’s aim to produce happy and well-balanced pupils.’

The Arts are fabulous with facilities including a 350-seat theatre, a separate drama studio and a dance studio. The ever-popular Chapel Choir boasts a busy annual calendar of events including evensong at St Paul’s and a recent tour of Vienna and Salzburg in the summer. The Jazz and Dance Night, Music for a Summer Evening, the Year 7 Pantomime, the annual school musical and Open Mic Nights sit alongside House events and termly senior and junior concerts, showcasing the importance and value of live performance at the school.

Netball, lacrosse, tennis, swimming, athletics, handball, football, and cricket are all played competitively as an integral part of the school’s positive approach to physical wellbeing. Much is made of the school’s incredible 25m, 6-lane swimming pool; it offers swimming as a life skill, lifeguard qualification training, Swim England club capability and hosts a large number of children from local state and private schools for swimming lessons and invitational galas. A state of the art fitness suite was opened in Autumn 2022 in response to pupil demand and many are enjoying working with the newly appointed strength and conditioning coach.

If the girls were asked about their favourite parts of school life, the school food would score highly. It is well known that nutrition contributes significantly to wellbeing, and the quality and provision of food at St George’s is simply superb. The girls enjoy well balanced menus with tremendous choice, varied according to taste and preference, so there is always something to help the girls stay fueled for a full but balanced school day. The stunning Food Technology Room, brightly dressed in the school’s signature grey and red, is used by pupils of all ages to learn more about great nutrition as well as offering a practical education vital for future independent living.

A recent Alumna recently reflected on how St George’s had prepared her for the future and she concluded that it was the emphasis that the Head, Mrs Hewer and the staff more generally placed upon developing a healthy balance in life. “When you go out into the real world, life isn’t just about your work, your job. You need to have balance; you need to connect with people, see your family and your friends, do sport, and the things you love as well. That balance is something you learn from a young age at St George’s.”

A series of tailored open events are held every term to allow families to experience St George’s firsthand and get to know the girls and the culture of the school in person. Contact Admissions@stgeorges-ascot.org.uk to arrange a visit.
