National Women'sRegister - Ascot
If you wanted to find out more about tips on how to cope during the recession, whether your birth order might have affected your life or maybe learn about the Citizens’ Advice Bureau you could consult your computer or a therapist, or maybe look into your next-door neighbour’s front room if you live in north Ascot and your neighbour is a member of the local branch of the National Women’s Register. However, members don’t have to come only from North Ascot and there are currently members from South Ascot, Sunninghill, Bracknell, Winkfield and one recent new member comes from Windlesham.
The Register was set up 50 years ago to meet the needs of lively-minded women who wished to get together, but not to discuss domestic or work topics. The North Ascot branch of this national organisation has been going since 1977 and has provided members with the opportunity to undertake research into the programme topics with lively discussion as a result. It has also created many long-lasting friendships among the members, many of whom did not originate from the area, who come from all walks of life and hold, or did hold, a wide range of occupations between them.
Meetings are held in the evening once a fortnight in members’ homes, which makes for a more relaxed atmosphere than a public hall. Not all meetings are of the discussion type: ad hoc coffee mornings are held which provide a relaxed way for new members to find out more, outside visits are undertaken from time to time as well as walks guided by one of the members.
