Set between the two beautiful and historic resorts of Ceret (www.ceret.fr/ang/ville-ceret/sommaire.htm) in the foothills of the Pyrenees (5 mins drive up the road), and Collioure (www.maisonrose-collioure.com/collioure.html) on the Mediterranean coast approx 30 mins drive away (la Cote Vermeille), Maureillas boasts all the usual attractions of an old French village – a boulangerie, some sleepy cafes, a tabac, La Poste – you get the picture? 6 miles away lies the Spanish border so you can enjoy the best of both worlds, French or Spanish. The historic medieval town of Perpignan is just up the road and Barcelona is accessible for Sunday lunch.
The Department of the Pyrenees Orientales conceals many treasures: a wonderful Mediterranean coastline with fantastic beaches, a landscape of breathtaking mountainous beauty, an important architectural heritage and a rich and varied culture. The area offers something to suit everyone – swimmers, sunbathers, walkers.
And don’t forget the Pyrenees in winter – skiers and boarders alike are well catered for. The ‘pistes’ are approximately 1 ½ hr drive from Maureillas on the road to Andorra and all equipment can be hired at the resorts.
Formerly part of Catolonia, the area of Pyrenees Orientales offers a spicy mixture of French and Catalan in customs and food.
Lively resorts are dotted along the coastline packed with busy restaurants, cafes, clubs and discotheques.
Many artists such as Matisse and Picasso were seduced by the particular luminosity and colours which bathe the Pyrenees Orientales. And just across the border, you can visit the beautiful and stylish town of Figueres, home town of Salvador Dali which boasts the Dali Museum, full of surrealist masterpieces. Dali himself is buried inside this museum.
