Thames Hospice

Thames Hospice were delighted to welcome members from Ascots President’s Club along to the new Thames Hospice site by Bray Lake, along with Penny Bevan Rahming. The President's Club were the driving force behind the establishment of the Paul Bevan Cancer Foundation in Ascot in 1985. Following the death of her husband Paul in 1981, Penny Bevan Rahming and Paul’s friend Dr Geoff Cook, wanted to provide day-to-day support for local people with a life-limiting diagnosis. They were supported by the President’s Club.

The Foundation merged with Thames Hospice in 2005, and the Day Therapy Unit moved from Ascot to the current Thames Hospice in Windsor in 2017.

Day Therapy services will be amongst the first services to move to the new hospice site in 2020, where we will be able to double our provision and care for more than 600 people a year. The legacy of the Paul Bevan name and Present's Club will continue at our new hospice.

You can watch the video of Penny Bevan Rahming speaking about our new Paul Bevan Day Therapy Centre at https://thameshospice.org.uk/new-build-week-17

Papplewick  School, Year 4 boys visited the Natural History Museum, London, as part of a project on habitats and food chains.

During the visit the boys explored the various zones of the museum. They learned the origins of myths of unicorns and mermaids and discussed how human interference has affected food chains.

The boys were particularly excited by the Dinosaur and the Restless Earth Zones, developing their knowledge of how long the dinosaurs inhabited the Earth and the events that eventually led to their extinction. They also took part in an excellent "Adventure to the Deep" show, finding out about the teeming life in the different levels of the world’s oceans and how human expansion is causing problems with some of the world's most diverse and vulnerable ecosystems.

On Tuesday 26th February, Professor Lord Robert Winston returned to Charters School in Sunningdale  to deliver our inaugural lecture in the newly refurbished Lecture Theatre, courtesy of a grant from the Wolfson Foundation.

Lord Winston’s lecture was entitled ‘Can Science Make You Happy?’ and was attended by 55 of the school’s Year 10 students.

He began by showing MRI images of the brain after patients had been told jokes or eaten chocolate, explaining that these activities register in the reward centre in the brain and showed how research suggested happiness drops around the age of 30 but gradually increases from 50 onwards.

Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital announce the launch of new Neonatal Intensive Care transport incubator system.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Peter’s Hospital is delighted to announce the arrival of its new transport incubator system for use by the Surrey Neonatal Transfer Service. The fully equipped mobile intensive care unit for babies was launched at the Level 3 unit in March and has already made several journeys, including a trip to Swansea to bring a premature baby back home to Surrey.

The rig consists of a new ventilator, capable of delivering state of the art modes of breathing support including synchronised volume targeted ventilation and High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) as well as non- invasive respiratory support modes such as Humidified High Flow Nasal Cannula (HHFNC) and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).

There is a unit on board to provide controlled body cooling during transit for babies who have sustained brain injury and a bank of syringe pumps to provide critical fluids and drugs. The transport trolley also incorporates advanced monitoring equipment for the continuous measurement of vital signs from sensors connected to the breathing tube, arterial line, and on the skin for enhanced safety during transfer in the dedicated ambulance.

In relation to the works, which started in January 2019, a series of public engagement events were held locally to enable residents and business owners to meet the SSEN team, find out more about the route of the works  and the multi-million pound project to upgrade the electricity network between Ascot and Chobham.  As a result of these meetings we have been working with Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council and Surrey County Council to alleviate concerns raised by businesses and residents regarding the ongoing programme of roadworks.

The revised programme of works can be found above.

To keep up to date on our traffic management including road closures please visit roadworks.org and search for your postcode.

There are no planned interruptions to the local electricity supply and this installation will not affect the existing supplies within the area.
