Ascot Racecourse welcomed over 290,000 people for a successful five days of Royal Ascot  2019.  The world famous horseracing event was once again enjoyed by people from all over the world, including The Queen.

Cllr David Hilton, cabinet member for Ascot, said: “This year’s Royal Ascot week was brilliant as always.

“The event always brings a huge amount of people to the area and this year was no different. I hope that everyone who did attend will remember their time fondly and come back again next year.

“Thank you to all of the staff and partners who worked tirelessly before, after and during the event to make it as special as it was.

“We’ve been able to proudly show off a wonderful part of our borough to the world and we’re grateful to residents and businesses for their patience and support during this busy time of year.”

Alastair Warwick, Chief Operating Officer at Ascot Racecourse, said: “It was another great year for Royal Ascot.

“A lot of hard work goes into preparing for this world famous five-day event, and everyone involved is crucial to its success.

Royal Ascot in numbers:

• 5 keg rooms were inspected by our trading standards team
• 10 spirits were tested for adulteration of substitution
• 10 under-age mystery shopper tests were carried out at bar and cigarette kiosks
• 152 visits were paid to bars, restaurants and shops within the venue, and 2 visits to street vendors
• 5 pubs were inspected outside the venue
• 71,000 people were in attendance at once at its peak
• Over 50 no waiting and suspension signs were put up to keep the area traffic-free
• 17 community wardens worked a collective 328 hours

Little Roo Neonatal Fund were lucky enough to be nominated as ‘Charity of the Year’ by Talon Outdoor Media Agency by colleagues Tom and Charlie Perret after their daughter Aurelia was cared for by the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Peter’s Hospital. Aurelia was born at 34 weeks in St Peter’s Hospital on 3 July 2017 and spent three weeks in NICU.

Talon held their sixth birthday party at Café De Paris, London in April where a charity auction was run and they raised a huge amount of money. Little Roo, the dedicated Neonatal charity for St Peter’s Hospital, will receive £103,000, the single largest donation the fund has ever received and Talon are still fundraising! Talon are also supporting a charity called FAB and funds will be divided between both charities.   

Charlie Perret, Aurelia’s mum said: “We are so grateful for the incredible care she was given and immense support we got from everyone, doctors, nurses and all the staff at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Peter’s Hospital.”

The Lexicon is delighted to announce that the town centre will be hosting a ROARsome T-Rex Encounter this summer.  From Friday, August 2nd to Monday, August 26th 2019, the town centre will be home to the UK’s largest animatronic dinosaur.

Watch your step… this incredible T-Rex, stands at an impressive 18-metre-long, 8-metres-high… and boasts a deafening roar, moving eyes, head and tail!

The T-Rex Encounter will open at 10.30am on Friday, August 2 2019 when Dean Lomax, internationally recognised multi-award-winning palaeontologist, presenter and author will countdown to ROAR!  Visitors young and old will be mesmerised by the breath-taking sight waiting for them on The Avenue, outside Marks & Spencer and H&M. 

And if that wasn’t enough, on Friday morning, visitors will also have the opportunity to hear more about the T-Rex and ask Dean questions about the time of the dinosaurs – as well as being able to see a number of fascinating fossils!

This year's group of Papplewick Players, comprising Year 7 and Year 8 boys, put on William Shakespeare's Henry V, a swashbuckling romp through 15th Century Normandy that culminated in the Battle of Agincourt, an epic clash and an English victory that still resonates today.

Raphael Shires played the lead role with understated aplomb and successfully captured the shrewd and determined character of the English King. The cast of twenty-four, resplendent in period costume, tread the boards - a simple stage with Gothic flats - with great enthusiasm, and were nigh on word perfect, reciting their difficult lines in true Shakespearean fashion.  

Headmaster Tom Bunbury said: “It was wonderful to see the boys approach the play with such energy – they did a great job.”

Serco has been appointed to provide weekly waste and recycling collections across Ascot, Maidenhead and Windsor.

The new contract will continue to offer weekly waste and recycling collections including food waste, mixed recycling and general waste, as well as the fortnightly subscribed green waste collection service.

With a focus on making waste collections as environmentally friendly as possible, the new contract will see the introduction of a more sustainable fleet of collection trucks. The new trucks will use hybrid technology and reduce carbon emissions by 30% compared to standard trucks. On top of that, under the new contract recycled and garden waste will be collected together further helping to reduce emissions and cut mileage. The trucks will also have 'whisper quiet' electric bin lifts which will also help reduce carbon emissions and the noise associated with conventional hydraulic lifts.

Legendary jockey Lester Piggott had a statue unveiled at Royal Ascot this morning in his honour.

Epsom Downs was the first racecourse to reveal one of nine life-size Lester Piggott statues on Derby Day earlier this month and the statues will be located at courses around the country, sculpted by William Newton. These have been created in celebration of champion jockey Lester Piggott's astonishing nine Derby wins, 65 years since his first on Never Say Die (1954).

Piggott recorded a record 116 victories at Royal Ascot. His first win came at the meeting in the 1952 Wokingham aboard the Walter Nightingall-trained Malka's Boy. "The Longfellow" won the Gold Cup a record 11 times, which included three successive victories aboard Sagaro (1975, 1976, 1977).

Speaking at the unveiling, Piggott said: "It is a fantastic statue and it has a great likeness to me - William has done a very good job with it.

"I have enjoyed some great days at Royal Ascot. Everybody looked forward to this meeting. To win the Gold Cup once is special and I was very lucky to win the race on 10 occasions.

"I rode some brilliant horses in the race including Sagaro, but probably the best was a filly called Gladness. It has been a very lucky course for me."
