On Thursday 6th February,  twelve Year 7 Papplewick boys were invited to a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) 'Inspire' day at Intel Ltd. The boys had a truly great day as they learnt about AI (artificial intelligence), how to program an android in order to make a jam sandwich and they also built a personal computer. In the afternoon the boys were challenged to design and make a rocket car and then fire it from one side of a room to the other.

At the end of the day the boys took part in a question and answer session with a range of Intel employees regarding the skills and traits needed to gain employment in the tech industry.

Headmaster Tom Bunbury said "This was a great experience for the boys to see the various challenges in this fast moving industry - programming an android to make a jam sandwich would not normally be part of their day!"

Year 4 visited Dr Choc's Chocolate Factory opposite Windsor Castle  on Thursday 23rd January as part of the ‘Geography of Chocolate’ scheme of work for their Geography course where they divided into two groups   - one making and decorating chocolate bars making 3 bars using a choice of dark, milk or white chocolate,  all ethically sourced from Peru whilst the other group enjoyed a presentation on the process of chocolate- making  with a quick history lesson involving Hernan Cortez, Mayans and monkeys! They then swapped over and came  away armed with their bars  and bags of knowledge as to where the cacao pods are grown and the process that occurs to transform it into chocolate.

Headmaster Tom Bunbury said "This particular part of the Year 4 Geography course always seems  rather popular, funnily enough !"

Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals currently has a large number of patients with Norovirus. In order to safeguard patients and prevent spread of the virus to visitors we have taken the difficult decision to restrict visiting to all inpatient areas.

Inpatient visiting will be restricted to exceptional circumstances. Exceptions include visitors to patients at the end of their life, patients in intensive care, babies in the neonatal intensive care unit, children in paediatrics and partners to the maternity unit. In these incidences we ask that only two visitors attend at any time and no children or babies attend.

We have set up a hotline via the Patient Advice and Liaison Service, manned from 8am to 8pm, on 01932 723553 to provide advice and guidance to members of the public about visiting and for those seeking updates on their loved ones who are inpatients.

In order to bring the maximum opportunity to reduce transmission of Norovirus we are also taking measures to minimise footfall around the Trust and asking everyone to use the main entrance to St Peter’s Hospital where possible.

Trading standards take action against India-based call centre to protect thousands

The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead has helped thousands of UK citizens by taking action against a call centre which was taking money for services it could not provide and changing consumer’s landline providers without the appropriate consents.

The Royal Borough’s trading standards team secured a voluntary undertaking against Kunal Gupta, the director of two telecommunications companies; Guaranteed Telecom Ltd and Met Technologies Ltd trading as Zoom, Millenium Talk and Met Plus after receiving over 300 complaints about monthly direct debit payments for unknown services. Consumers alleged that following an initial cold-call in relation to selling call blocking services a direct debit was set up but no services were provided. Call blocking services can only be activated by the actual telephone provider of the line, not a by a third party.

The Royal Borough’s investigation found that through the two companies nearly 13,000 UK residents had been impacted by the activities of Mr Gupta and his companies.
