At the weekend three Year 12 students were part of the team which won the Space Design Competition National Finals at Imperial College London.

On 11th and 12th March, students from Charters Sixth Form took part in The Space Design Competition National Finals at Imperial College London. Three Year 12 students who had won their regional heat back in November to qualify for the final, were accompanied to the 48 hour competition by Head of Physics at the Sunningdale school, Mr Morgan-John.

After a gruelling 13 hour day on Saturday, followed by an early start on Sunday, the school are incredibly proud to report that Lauren, Libby and Natalia were part of the winning team.

The students summed up their experience at the event for us:

“As part of the UK Space Design Competition, we were put into one of four teams of about 60 students each from a range of schools who also were part of winning regional teams and asked to design a space station that orbits the sun. Within our team we then split ourselves into a range of groups including structural engineering, human factors, operations, automation, and marketing and were then given points that our relative groups had to cover in a final presentation. The competition lasted from 10AM – 10PM but most people worked into the night, trying to make our presentation as professional and viable as possible. Our team won the competition, and we learnt a lot from the other people who had competed before. It was a challenging educational experience and I hope we can do it again next year and get more people involved”.

Congratulations to Lauren, Libby and Natalia for their hard work over the two days which ultimately led to their success.

At the start of National Careers Week, Year 7 students welcomed two guests to their assembly; one of Charters School’s past students who is currently studying Modern Foreign Languages at The University of Reading and a business consultant who works in mergers and acquisitions.

Year 13 students were joined by another former student during their assembly, who despite being disappointed with her A Level results is now the Transformation Director at the British Red Cross; she was keen to stress that results day shouldn't define you. Later in the day the GCSE and A Level French students heard about their guest’s experience of studying a joint honours degree in Geography and Russian, and how her language skills have benefitted her career.

Last summer, the Ascot & Sunnings Neighbourhood Plan Delivery Group (NPDG) urged local residents to view the planning application for the above Ascot High Street field (called Ascot Green in the Neighbourhood Plan - see plan below), -  the subject of a new planning application ( (RBWM 22/01971) ).  As the Application, has moved to the next stage, it is interesting to look back to 2012, when Ascot residents backed the principle of radical development on the High Street, with the promise of a new , two sided, vibrant High Street, along with a range of new community facilities - open space, shops, village green , village hall and even a school.
