Charters School   :: Learning Support Centre

The school motto at Charters School is Unity, Respect, Excellence and these words are fully embodied in the Learning Support Centre, an area within the school that caters specifically for students with a physical disability.

In the early 1980’s at a time when many other schools were unsuitable for students with a physical disability, Charters installed lifts and started a programme of inclusion that was extremely unusual in a comprehensive at that time.

Over the years the school has continued to value every student, creating a specialist centre which includes a physiotherapy bed for alleviating the symptoms of cerebral palsy, hoists to aid toileting and an array of other equipment that allows all students to participate fully in school life.

External specialists including physiotherapists and experts who are trained to help those who are visually or hearing impaired, visit regularly to help students meet their full potential.

The Resource Unit was moved to its present home on the school site in 1992, but completely refurbished in 2015 when it was renamed as the Learning Support Centre.

Outstanding’ nursing home in Ascot praised for ‘passion for care’

A nursing home in Ascot has been praised as “outstanding” by inspectors for its high quality of care and support.

The managers of St David’s Nursing home on Priory Road were noted by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to have “great passion” for the service they provided.  The CQC report stated how residents and families felt staff “go the extra mile” when supporting them and how residents felt they “really mattered to staff”.

The 39-bed home, set in the grounds of Ascot Priory, has been run by local family, the Tanners, for more than 30 years.  It has been awarded the highest accolade by the Care Quality Commission, the national body for regulating care homes, each time it has been inspected.

The daughter of one resident said “there isn’t a better care home in the country my dad could be in.”

Following months of consultation, Thames Hospice has secured the option to purchase land to build a new 28-bed, purpose-built, hospice by Bray Lake in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead - subject to planning permission.

Debbie Raven, Chief Executive, Thames Hospice, said: “We have seen demand for all of our services increase year-on-year and we are at a point where we need to expand to meet the needs of our local community. Our current Hospice in Windsor is at maximum occupancy and we have up to 10 people per day waiting for much-needed care.  After reviewing a number of options to develop our existing site, we have concluded that it does not provide a solution to meet our future needs.

“A new purpose-built hospice would enable us to support more local people, through providing additional inpatient, outpatient and community services, building on the expert care delivered at our current facility in Windsor for almost 30 years.”
