Baby ‘beardies’ born at Papplewick School: New hatchlings at Papplewick’s Herpetology Club have caused great excitement at the boys’ preparatory school in Ascot.
The baby bearded dragons – known as ‘beardies’ - hatched at school just before the boys got back from their Christmas holidays, and they have all been adopted by willing and caring Herpetology Club members.

Steve Elkington, Science Master at the school who runs the Herpetology Club, said: “The boys have watched the eggs being laid in the sand, and helped to move them to the incubator.  They’re thrilled with the new arrivals. We have more beardies’ eggs and a batch of leopard gecko eggs about to hatch at any moment!”

The Herpetology Club is a highly popular activity at the school.  There are around 100 boys in the club, and the animals they have include 60 snakes, mostly corn snakes, and all constrictors (not poisonous); more than 20 bearded dragons, and a number of leopard geckos.
