Children to Uncover Cranbourne’s Past
The children of Cranbourne Primary School are preparing for a fortnight of events when they will learn about the 300 year history of their school.
During the first two weeks in June the pupils of the school will enjoy a range of activities during which they will discover how the school has changed since it first opened in 1709. These will include researching records, working with experts and investigating the school’s historic site at Lovel Road, Winkfield.
Following the success of earlier appeals, the children will also have the opportunity to interview many of the former staff and pupils who will be revisiting the school during its tercentenary fortnight. Headteacher Colin Sambrook said: ‘It promises to be very exciting and I expect us all to learn a lot more about Cranbourne’s long history. The children have already come up with some searching questions and creative ideas for their investigations. It’s also bringing together a lot of people from the school’s past so it should be a truly memorable time.’
The fortnight will start on Monday June 1st when the whole school will walk to St Peter’s Church for a short service. In an echo of a tradition from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when Cranbourne pupils walked to church on Whit Monday to receive new uniform, the children will be presented with a tercentennial souvenir by school governors.
Following their return to school, they will also be able to hear the first ringing of the recently refurbished school bell in a ceremony attended by many of those who have already donated to the appeal for the costs of this work.
At the end of the fortnight the school will be staging an exhibition of the children’s learning about the history of their school. This will be open to the public at the school’s summer fair between noon and 4pm on Sunday 14th June. It is expected that many former pupils and staff will be in attendance.
If you would like to take part in any of these events or would like to make a donation to the appeal for the school bell you can contact Colin Sambrook on 01344 882350 or
