Winkfield Parish People Awards 2009
The 2009 Winkfield Parish People Awards 2009 were made at the Annual Winkfield Parish Council meeting, held at Carnation Hall on Tuesday, April 28. There were five Awards made in the Inviduals category and one Award in the Groups category, for outstanding contribution to the local community and Parish life. The individuals were Mrs Jackie Dudley, Dave and Monica Whiting, Anthony Stevens, Mrs. Wendy French and Joan and Roger White. The Group Award was made to the Martins Heron and Warren Community Centre.
INDIVIDUALS CATEGORY
Mrs Jackie Dudley: Jackie set up a local support group for fellow Ostomates – the East Berkshire Ostomy Club (EBOC) which meets at Martin’s Heron and the Warren Community Centre every Monday. Jackie helps man the telephone advice line for the Colostomy Association in Reading and helps with administration. Jackie is also a very active member of the Martin’s Heron and The Warren Residents Association, the local Neighbourhood Watch and Friends of Lily Hill Park.

Dave and Monica Whiting: Dave and Monica are a truly inspirational couple who been regular volunteer drivers for a local charity ‘Help is at Hand’ for many years now which involves taking and collecting people from their hospital appointments. Whilst there they often seek out other people they know who have been admitted and cheer them up by popping in to see them and bringing them up to date with local news. They run the Chavey Down Bingo Club, again collecting members and dropping them off afterwards.
Anthony Stevens has lived for many years in Chavey Down and wears so many community hats that it is difficult to know where to begin: Anthony has been involved in the Locks Ride Scarecrows since its inauguration many years ago and plays the leading role in pulling it all together.
Anthony is an area coordinator for Neighbourhood Watch ensuring everyone is well informed and up to date and he is a fundamental part of the local church.
Mrs Wendy French: Without Wendy, the May Day Fair would not happen!! For the past five years she has worked tirelessly giving up all her free time to ensure that the May Day Fair is an enormous success. The administration and organisation of such an event is a huge task and Wendy does the majority of this.Wendy also helps to run the Sunday School at St Marys Church and organises the distribution of the Parish Magazine.
Joan and Roger White: Joan and Roger are Litter Barons. Every time they go out for a walk they litterpick – and his is at least once a day. They make an absolutely enormous difference to the local environment. In fact it is easy to know when they are away or on holiday because the amount of visible litter changes overnight. They are very supportive of the local community and do everything they can to help. They are active members of the Martins Heron and the Warren Residents Association.GROUP CATEGORY
Mrtins Heron and Warren Community Centre: The Management Committee of the Martin’s Heron Community Centre has diligently volunteered their
time and skills to achieve a well managed, profitable community facility. The Centre is used by a number of local groups for leisure and educational activities and is an amenity greatly appreciated by many people.
