Jagz Band Competition
The first Jagz Band Competition was a great success, taking place at the Ascot venue in the first week of January the competition featured 4 heats and a final with the winner of each heat plus the act the audience voted for going through to the final. Each heat and final was judged by people involved in the local music scene which featured agents, band managers, promoters and musicians.
Overall the competition demonstrated the wide variety of styles and musical ability of local performers, artists that took part were Hoopy Frood, Akin, Kinky Boot Beasts, The Soft South, Octopus Metropolis, David Goo, Matt & Scott, Bebop Set, Mercia, Vine Messiah, Beef, Carl Komuro, Sam Brett, Me & Matt Cooper, The Papers, Don’t Look Now, Zeeley Moon, Silva Tone and Menendez.
The five acts to get into the final were Reading based rock band Kinky Boot Beasts, Slough based duo Mercia, Maidenhead based singer songwriter Sam Brett, and urban funk band The Papers and Wokingham acoustic trio Me & Matt Cooper providing a great evening of music that will be remembered for a long time by the packed out audience who attended on the night.
The winning band was The Papers who get to play at Jagz later in the year, lead singer Yoshi said :-
“Although it's always nice to win, this was one of those occasions where the actual taking part was victory enough...Great venue, distinguished audience, but most significantly this was a great opportunity to meet top-class local musical talent. As underground artists, collaboration and co-operation can only be good for the scene - the first step being an awareness that such a mentality exists. If such a mentality was collectively adopted, there'd be no stopping us!”
