As part of Heathfield School’s efforts to achieve Eco-Schools status, the whole school took part in a national Eco-Schools Campaign, ‘Switch-Off Fortnight’, between 21st November and 4th December 2011. The aim of the fortnight was to increase the school’s awareness of ‘switching off’ and to reduce the school’s energy consumption during the two weeks and beyond.
Throughout the fortnight a number of activities took place. The girls enjoyed supper by candle light on the two Friday evenings, daily email reminders and ‘did you know?’ facts were distributed to all the girls and staff, Form V became ‘switch-off’ monitors and Forms I and II were set a personal energy-saving challenge over the two weeks and took part in an energy-saving quiz. During the second week the school managed to reduce its electricity consumption by 140 units which was an excellent start, proving that the awareness campaign had started to have some impact.
Headmistress Jo Heywood comments “As we are a full boarding school which operates 24 hours 7 days a week it is vital that we work together as a school to reduce our energy consumption further. It is essential that the hard work that has started during ‘Switch-Off Fortnight’ continues and we strive to reduce our energy usage wherever possible”.
Between 12th March and 18th March 2012 Heathfield School will take part in another Eco-Schools campaign, ‘Waste Week’, which will encourage staff and girls to consider the waste they are throwing away and recycling.
