Help Decide How to Spend £100,000 on Cycling Improvements

cycling in RBWMWhen the Royal Borough earlier this year set aside part of its 2010/11 capital budget and asked local residents how they thought this could best be spent, improving cycling facilities emerged as the top priority.

As a result, an extra £100,000 has been allocated for investment in cycling schemes and initiatives during the current financial year.

To ensure the money is used as effectively as possible, local cyclists are now being asked to tell the council about the issues that affect their everyday cycling journeys to, from and around the borough. They are also being consulted about their priorities for how and where the funds should be spent.

Survey forms are being distributed to cyclists at every railway station and in Windsor and Maidenhead town centres. Alternatively, copies can be picked up from local bike and cycle hire shops, the Town Hall in Maidenhead and the council offices in Sheet Street, Windsor. There is also an online version of the survey at

The closing date for responses is Friday 20 August. For further information about the survey contact the transport policy team on 01628 796097 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Cllr Liam Maxwell, lead member for policy and performance and chairman of the cycle forum, appealed to cyclists to make their voices heard.

He said: “We want to make sure we are delivering what residents want, so if you have an interest in cycling in the borough please complete the form. It will only take a couple of minutes and will mean the schemes and initiatives we introduce will best meet the needs of local cyclists.”

Cllr Colin Rayner, lead member for highways and streetcare, added: “As a keen cycling family who enjoy the local cycle network we are pleased that residents have backed spending this money on cycling. I am positive we can improve cycling facilities for everyone to enjoy in the future.”
