St. Francis Dance Group to Star in London

st francis dancers - youth dance englandA dance group from St Francis Catholic Primary School, South Ascot, will be tasting the bright lights when they appear at the O2 this coming weekend.
They are taking part in the regional finals of Youth Dance England's National U.Dance Programme, which aims to give every child and young person in England the opportunity to take part in a dance performance each year. Dance for Life, (sponsored by the British Red Cross) brings together schools, colleges, dance and youth groups in local communities in a celebration of youth dance. St Francis Headteacher Jane Gow said, "The St Francis School Dance Club was set up in January this year as an after school club for pupils from Years 3-6. It is run by four dance leaders from Charters school; Amy Cockram, Katie Gow, Emily Finnemore and Georgina Smith. The pupils train once a week after school

"The Dance leaders choreographed the dance called "Child Soldiers" which tells the story of young children in war torn parts of the world who are conscripted into the army and taught to fight. The dance then portrays the role of the Red Cross who rescue the injured children and help them to recover from their war experiences" added Mrs Gow.

The London final takes place on Sunday July 18 and is a regional final with the groups who won the competitions in the London and Surrey areas.

The British Red Cross makes dance accessible to all those aged 18 and under, regardless of ability. Young performers can enjoy dancing while raising money for the world’s largest humanitarian network.

Groups are invited to choreograph a dance routine that reflects an aspect of the Red Cross’ work, such as life-saving work in the UK and abroad. Dance for Life co-ordinators are available to help with any ideas.

Pupils get the chance to work in their local communities on  fundraising activities, while also gaining essential life skills through a choice of humanitarian action teaching resources.
