Borough Sports Bursaries – Time to Apply

Talented young sportsmen and women are once again being invited to apply for a financial "helping hand" from the Royal Borough in the latest round of sports bursary awards.

Each year the Royal Borough makes bursaries available to young people and their coaches involved in a wide range of sports to go on to even greater achievements in their chosen fields.

Nominations are also invited for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement award presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to sport in the borough over a number of years.
The closing date for applications for all awards is Saturday 31 July.

For application forms for the sports and coach bursary awards, to nominate someone for the Lifetime Achievement award or for further information contact the Sports Development Team on 01753 778565 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The winner of this award will join past recipients including last year's winner Pat Capp for her contribution to swimming teaching for more than 30 years, Ray Fields, former director of WAMDSAD, for his contribution to disability sport and Gina McGregor MBE for services to netball.

Sports bursary awards up to £250 are offered to young people to help with training costs to help them gain local, national and international recognition in their sport.

The coach bursary award scheme aims to acknowledge the vital contribution coaches make to sport and raise the profile of coaches and enhance coaching education in the Royal Borough.  It is intended to help towards coaching courses, purchase of equipment and clothing, and travelling expenses.

Cllr Simon Dudley, lead member for adult and community services, said: "All of these awards provide a great opportunity to raise the profile of sport in the Royal Borough by giving those involved a well-deserved financial helping hand.

"A great many people demonstrate huge commitment and dedication into developing the sporting stars of the future – not just the young people themselves but their coaches who put in equally long hours to pass on their skills and expertise.  Every single one of them deserves our help and support, and hopefully these awards can go some way to providing that support.

"And the Lifetime Achievement award is a very good, public way of recognising that commitment – so if you know someone you think deserves that recognition please don't hesitate to nominate them."
