Recycling of Unused Prescription Medicines
The Magnolia House surgery in Station Road, Sunningdale, has introduced a system of recycling unused medicines by using a charitable organisation called Intercare.
The Code of Ethics of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society does not allow pharmacies to reuse medicines returned to the pharmacy and they are always destroyed.
Intercare is licensed by the Environmental Agency to receive returned prescription medicines for screening and shipping to a network of Health Centres in Africa. Not only does this reduce NHS waste and help the environment, but, most importantly, it could save lives in Africa.
Patients who have prescription medicines, which are unused, are asked to bring them to the surgery and hand them to the receptionist. They will be screened before being sent to Intercare.
