Lands End to John O’Groats - Raising Money for Your Heart
Local entrepreneur, David Holloway, from North Ascot is cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats (just under 1000 miles) in only 11 days to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and Sport Relief.
For David this is an important cause as only last November on his 47th birthday he suffered a heart attack which came as a real shock. He noticed chest pains while riding his bike and sensibly decided to see the doctor – later that week his blocked artery was repaired with a stent at Wexham Park hospital in Slough.
Accompanying David is Abe Sharp, a work colleague from Maidenhead who is also raising money for the charity. Abe’s wife, Anneke and baby son Jonah went along to support them when they reached Ross-on-Wye after 3 days.
They are currently on day 7 heading for Edinburgh (Tues) and aim to be in John o’Groats by end of Saturday – the ride averages 90 miles per day. So far they have encountered some gruesome climbs in Cornwall, the Lake District, over the Pennines and the North Yorkshire Moors – terrain that the Thames Valley flood plain may not have prepared them for!
The other charity David is raising money for is Sport Relief because, as David said: “I decided to support Sport Relief after watching Eddie Izzard running 43 marathons - the length of the UK. Think of it as solidarity with another flat-footed 47 year old. I don’t know how he did it and it shows you can do (almost) the impossible if you try. I’ll admit to be being inspired.”
David lives with his wife, Eleanor who has stayed at home to look after their two daughters, Angela, who is sitting her GCSEs and Frances, both at Charters School in Sunningdale. They have lived in North Ascot for over 20 years.
So far David has raised over £4000 and is hoping to meet his £5000 target. If you would like to support him, or see their blog, complete with photos of their inspiring adventure – visit: www.lejog4bhf.com
