Ocean Theatre:Guys & Dolls Rehearsals Start
Ocean Youth Theatre Company, formed in Ascot, January 2009, recently stunned their audiences at the BritVic Theatre, Licensed Victuallers School with a spectacular production of the musical Chess during the Easter holidays. The cast's open approach, commitment and enthusiasm for musical theatre was apparent throughout the show and the emotions they evoked on stage had many of the audience in tears as the show reached it’s tragic conclusion........
This highly acclaimed musical transforms the fiercely competitive globe trotting world of Grand Champion Chess into a supercharged mix of romantic rivalries and political intrigue. After initial reservations the young cast became engrossed and captivated with the storyline which takes the audience on a journey from Italy to Thailand and across two years of explosive game playing and manipulation. Based on an East meets West love triangle, the players, lovers, politicians and spies made their moves to the pulse of a monumental and diverse rock score delivered by a talented group of musicians led by Chess Musical Director Ron McAllister. Sir Tim Rice had hoped to visit the youngsters prior to the show but due to commitments abroad was unable to attend. He did however take the time in his busy schedule to send them all a personal note on opening night saying " I'm so sorry I can't see your 'Chess' but I know it'll be brilliant. Good luck and thanks to all, TR”
Chess is the third production of Ocean Youth Theatre Company whose previous shows have included Sweeney Todd and Oklahoma. The founder and award winning Director Andrew Miller formed the company to enable young people in the area to experience what's involved when putting together a
professional production. Being able to have the experience of working in a purpose built theatre with the support of professional musicians, stage crew, lighting and sound underpins the ethos of the Company. He believes that his choice of shows have each had their challenges and have given the young performers different and varied experiences. In the short time these young people have been together they have grown in their confidence and abilities and audiences that have followed their progress have commented that they are going from strength to strength each time they perform.
This sets a high expectation for their next production which is Guys and Dolls which will be performed at the BritVic Theatre on the 28th - 30th October 2010. Rehearsals have begun and the cast are already rising to the challenge. However if any young person aged between 12 and 17 are interested in joining this exciting group it is still not too late.
