Scenes From Winkfield MayDay Fete

Stall at the 2010 Winkfield MayDay Fete The Winkfield Row May Day Fair which took place at Carnation Hall on Bank Holiday Monday was opened at midday by the Reverend Catherine Blundell, vicar of the Benefice of Winkfield & Cranbourne. Once again the weather was far from ideal with strong winds and some showers; however the local community turned out in force to support the event and join in the fun!

The fair which has been going for 18 years enables local groups and individuals to meet up and exhibit or demonstrate their interests/skills in the form of craft stalls and exhibitions etc. It’s a great opportunity for the local community to get together in a fun, family-orientated environment and find out about the kind of things that are going on in the area. We don’t charge stallholder but instead ask for a donation and any surplus proceeds are given to a local charity. This year we chose Paul’s Trust, which supports disabled children up to the age of 18 who live within a 10 mile radius of Windsor. We are hoping to raise over £1000 to buy as specially adapted trike. We have supported many different charities over the years and were pleased to see TRAX Youth Club, who did badge making, Ascot Day Centre and Sebastian Gates all whom we have supported in the past joining us again this year. SEBEV, our chosen charity some years ago, did a fantastic job marshalling and providing first aid.

There were a great variety of stalls including children’s games, crafts, charity stalls, gifts, plants and produce and we had several new faces this year including Theatre Train, The Haven Healing Retreat, Wikaniko and Partylite.  This year we also had the addition of Ascot Locomotive Society which proved a big hit with young and old alike, plus regulars like Sheryl Beach with her swingboats and other rides and games! There was an area in the marquee for ‘Extended Services’ who provide support and out of school activities for children and families.  Chavey Down WI had a fantastic fair and had completely sold out of all it’s home-made produce by 2.30pm! We were entertained by Honeybees Cheerleaders and Natalie Dye singing to the accompaniment of Jon Shurlock. Basil & Crew, the pet corner, were as usual popular and this year Warfield 2nd Brownies helped out on this stall collecting donations. Many thanks to the May Day Fair committee for their hard work, and to those who helped on the day. Also a big thank you to local businesses and families who gave raffle prizes or donations and to Winkfield Parish Council for the use of Carnation Hall & Grounds.
