Girl Guides Centenary ‘Great Get Away To Switzerland’
During February school half term twelve guides and three leaders from Ascot joined together with 650 Girl Guides from across the UK in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. This was part of a national ‘Great Guide Getaway’ and was part of the celebrations for the centenary of Girlguiding UK 1910-2010.
Guides stayed in five different locations in and around the World Guiding Centre ‘Our Chalet’ in Adelboden. During each of the five days the girls took part in a range of activities and our youngest guide made her Guiding promise in the Ice Palace which is located at the top of the Jungfraujoch.
The Ascot guides stayed in Wilderswil and travelled to many interesting locations to take part in winter activities such as tobogganing, snow shoe walking and igloo building. There also went ice skating, swimming and of course shopping.
We had a fantastic time with an excellent finale where each Guide Unit held lanterns that they had made. This event also included celebrations for our annual Thinking Day where we think of other Girl Guides around the world.
The aim of Girlguiding is: ‘to help girls and young women develop emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually so that they can make a positive contribution to their community and the wider world’.
