New ! Audiobooks and e-Books Available to Download

Best-selling and classic titles are set to be available anytime, anywhere thanks to the introduction of an exciting new service from the Royal Borough's library, information, heritage and arts service, in partnership with specialist company OverDrive.

From Tuesday 8 September, borough library cardholders will be among the first in the country to be able to access and download a growing collection of audiobooks and ebooks – the Royal Borough is believed to be the third council to launch the service.

Downloading will be free for the first year to assess the take-up potential – and there's the added bonus of never having to return the books and therefore never risking late fees!

Cllr Simon Dudley, lead member for adult and community services, welcomed the convenient new addition to the library services.

He said: "This is aimed at residents who may be living busy lives and want to access reading and audio items at a time that suits them, as well as people such as adult day centre users who can listen to talking books via MP3 players.

"We will review the take-up over the year to determine how to progress the service."

To check out a title, users will need a valid library card, PIN, PC or Mac, and internet connection. They will have to download two lots of free software, both of which are easy to complete and allow access to more than 250 titles at present.

Once downloaded, digital titles can be enjoyed on the computer or transferred to a supported device such as an MP3 player. Many audio titles can also be burned to CD to enjoy in the car.

At the end of the lending period, titles will automatically expire and return to the collection, meaning there are no late fees or penalties for damaged items.

The books will be available to view and download at http://www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/libraries.htm
