The 20th annual charity New Year Wheelbarrow Race, was held in  Sunninghill, on January 1st 2016 , featuring 27 teams, starring everyone from " The Great Un - Washed” to the Loch Ness Monster herself ! This superb annual event is organised by the Rotary Club of Ascot and raise money for the Ascot & District Day Centre in Bagshot Road, Sunninghill (the Chandler Centre) and Ascot Rotary Club charities.

This year, the main sponsors were DeVere Venues  and Ascot Racecourse .

The Badly Dressed Men ( Ben Roberts; Mike Flynn and Ross Evans)  again won the Fastest Men's Time but a time of 7mins 30 secs was not recorded as there were only 3 men in the team. The next fastest Men were the Red Sparrows with a red hot time of 8 minutes 45 seconds, The Fastest Mixed Team were the Dale Wintonettes (Ben Cavill, Tara Moller, Paul Jupp and Dan Rebe) with 10 minutes and 21 seconds, while the Fastest Ladies cup went to the Pink Ladies (Kim Smerdon, Jane Theodoulou, Gilly Bailey and Lisa Davey), with an impressive 11 minutes 44 seconds.

Winner of the Best Fancy Dress was the Hope Trust with The Laddies (Andy Garrett, Tony Maffre, Chris Garrett, Charlotte Jackson. Running with them Peter Harris and Alan Everett)- a superb barrow bearing a remarkable resemblance to the Loch Ness Monster. The 'Lassies' with their very impressive Highland castle barrow, were not far behind. The Hope Trust is publicising a sponsored walk, which will take place in the summer, to raise funds for various local causes.  The judges had a very difficult job as so much effort had been made by all 26 teams, especially The Great Un Washed, Yabadabba Do, Safari 1 and 2, My Hangover, Carry on Sailing, the Spice Girls, the Fantastic Flamingoes, One in a Minion, the Red Sparrows, the Curry Club, the 1st Sunningdale Scouts Cooks and Campers, Meals on Wheels, the Star Troopers and the Tankers - to name but a few !

The racers followed the traditional route, along Lower Village Road towards the Dukes Head, down to the High Street, past the Comrades Club, along Truss Hill Rad and back down Upper Village Road, past the Carpenters, to the finishing line at School Road. Afterwards, many spectators joined the participants at the Carpenters for a hog roast, the presentations (made by Rotary Chairman, Alan Clare and Race organiser, David Mear), and the raffle -  for which local businesses generously donated prizes. Winners  received bottles of donated wine along with their cups and shields.  Fancy Dress Winners - The Laddies from the Hope Trust, entertained the crowd with a fine rendition of Ye Bonnie Banks and Braes.

A presentation was also made to Carpenters owner , Rachid Noui (pictured above), for his generous hosting of the after-race event and sale of a huge number of raffle tickets.
