Housing strategy consultation launches

A public consultation has launched asking Royal Borough residents for feedback on the council’s draft five-year housing strategy, which will be presented to Cabinet in February. 

The six-week consultation will allow residents to have their say on the strategy, which sets out plans to ensure that everyone in the borough can access suitable and affordable accommodation, along with housing-related support for those who need it.

The draft strategy was initially consulted on with councillors and partner organisations, including homeless charities and housing associations. It has been developed around three key objectives; delivering new homes, promoting health and wellbeing and supporting vulnerable residents to obtain and sustain appropriate accommodation.

Councillor Ross McWilliams, lead member for housing, communications and youth engagement, said: “The Royal Borough is a great place to live so it’s understandable that there has been an increasing flow of people moving here.

“As a council we don’t want to see the Royal Borough become a place where residents feel they need to move away because they can no longer afford to rent or buy, or where their children feel they need to move out of the area in order to get a place of their own. And we don’t want to become a place that doesn’t have enough social housing to support our most vulnerable people.

“We want to be a borough that delivers new homes not only for those coming into the borough, but for those who are already here.

“We do want to work with residents to make sure their voices are heard on this critically important issue.”

The feedback received from the consultation will be collated and analysed, prior to cabinet considering the strategy for adoption at their meeting on Thursday 25 February.
