Cumberland Lodge, the charity based in a former royal residence in Windsor Great Park, is offering new opportunities to get involved in its growing volunteers network.

Founded in 1947, the organisation specialises in embracing ‘difficult conversations’ and ‘disagreeing well’, by bringing together leaders, influencers, students and young people for candid conversations on pressing social and ethical issues. It is based in a beautiful 17th-century house that was granted to the original foundation in 1947 by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother).

As part of its charitable mission, it hosts a diverse and exciting programme of events throughout the year, including cultural and educational events for the local community.

There are currently opportunities for people with relevant skills and experience to volunteer by providing administrative support to the staff team, or helping to organise the extensive library and archive collections, or by having a more public-facing role in welcoming guests to events such as public talks and open days at the Lodge.

The volunteers network is co-ordinated by Peter Symonds, who is himself a volunteer. Peter lives and works in Windsor and has a keen interest in history. He spent many years managing volunteers for the National Trust at Petworth, in West Sussex.

Peter said, ‘Volunteering with Cumberland Lodge is a really rewarding experience. It’s a fascinating place, full of history and remarkable stories, and it has an important role to play in inspiring fresh thinking and bringing people together to talk about issues that affect us all.’

‘This is an exciting time for our volunteers network. People are at the heart of the mission here. It’s a friendly place, where volunteers are very much part of the team, helping to ensure that as many people as possible can experience and contribute to the valuable work that we do.

Details of the roles available and how to apply can be found on the Cumberland Lodge website at: cumberlandlodge.ac.uk/about-us/volunteer-us.

Informal enquiries about volunteering can be made to Melissa Galvan, Executive Assistant at Cumberland lodge, by emailing volunteers@cumberlandlodge.ac.uk or calling 01784 432316.

Founded in 1947, and based in a 17th-century former royal residence in Windsor Great Park, Cumberland Lodge is a charity that empowers people, through dialogue and debate, to tackle the causes and effects of social division.

We commission interdisciplinary research and convenes multi-sector conferences, seminars and panel debates, to challenge ‘silo thinking’ and engage people of all ages, backgrounds and perspectives in candid conversations that promote progress towards more peaceful, open and inclusive societies.

Cumberland Lodge actively involves students and young people in all aspects of its work, to nurture their potential as future leaders and change-makers. Alongside our main annual series, we host subsidised study retreats and bursaries for almost 4,000 students every year, with bursaries to support those with limited financial means.

We also run dedicated conferences for UK-based international students; thought-provoking seminars for sixth-formers in schools; and an Emerging International Leaders programme for international students, on Freedom of Religion or Belief. In addition, we provide scholarships and intensive personal development opportunities for doctoral students, and subsidised places for doctoral students to participate in our conference series.
