Sebastian's Action Trust - Volunteers’ Week   is a great opportunity for us to say a huge thank you to all of our volunteers who kindly give their time to our cause throughout the year.

The contribution made by our volunteers, both directly with our families and indirectly through fundraising and administration, is at the heart of the Trust.

Sebastian’s Action Trust is extremely fortunate to have more than 170 volunteers who give their time selflessly to help others and raise vital funds.

Without them, we would not be able to fulfil our mission of walking alongside families of seriously-ill children, from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

Volunteers can, and do, get involved in every aspect of our work - from helping in Bas Books (our bookshop in Bracknell), to driving families to medical appointments, helping us to prepare for family events including our Christmas in July party and also our Christmas party, getting involved in a range of jobs to improve our facilities at The Woodlands and The Bluebells, and also offering an extra pair of hands during one of our family or fundraising events.

Volunteering has many great benefits. As well as helping others, volunteering can help gain new skills and experience, boost self-esteem and build self-confidence and life skills.

Angela Bishton from Warfield, is one of our fundraising volunteers. She said: “I’ve only just started volunteering for Sebastian’s Action Trust and I am really enjoying it. I went to one of their fundraising lunches in Sunninghill a few months ago and their community fundraiser asked me if I’d like to get involved in other events.

“I have since helped out with bag packing at Marks & Spencer, Sandhurst, have taken part in a bucket collection outside Ascot Racecourse and have been on a stall during a family race day at Windsor Racecourse telling people about how the Trust supports seriously-ill children and their families. It’s a lovely charity and I’m so pleased to be involved.”

Neil Gordon and Jenny Baxter have volunteered many hours of their time over the last four years working a couple of sessions a week at our charity bookshop - Bas Books in Princess Square Shopping Centre, Bracknell.  During 2018/2019, our fantastic team of bookshop volunteers gave more than 4,500 hours of their time.

Both Neil and Jenny also like to help out at our fundraising events, including our annual charity golf day at Mill Ride Golf Club, Ascot, and marshalling at the Bagshot Bike Ride.

Neil said: “The camaraderie between volunteers and our regular customers is lovely. I have experienced the loss of a godson and granddaughter many years ago, and the work the Trust does with families who have experienced this heartbreak is so valuable.”

Everyone has a part to play in ensuring the Trust remains the forward-thinking, responsive and supportive organisation it has become. Our ‘family of families’ reaches beyond our beneficiaries to include every volunteer and supporter.
