A planning application for a new leisure centre, at Charters,  in Sunningdale, for the south of the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead has been formally submitted.

The application for the proposed new leisure centre, which would be co-located with Charters School and existing leisure centre facilities on the site, could see residents in the south of the borough benefit from an expanded daytime leisure offering, available seven days a week, including:

  • A six-lane, 25m swimming pool, meaning residents who live in the south of the borough would no longer have to travel to access swimming facilities.
  • An additional 60-station gym.
  • An additional dance studio.
  • A sports hall with eight badminton courts.
  • 100 additional car parking spaces.

Subject to planning permission being granted, the new centre, that would be known as Oaks Leisure Centre, would provide new facilities for residents to use seven days a week during the daytime, complementing those already at Charters Leisure Centre as well as additional, more modern facilities for pupils at Charters School during term time.

Cllr Samantha Rayner, lead member for culture and communities at the Royal Borough said:

“Formally submitting the planning application for this beautifully designed, high quality new leisure centre in the south of the borough is a big step forward and shows our commitment to improving access to leisure facilities for all our residents.

“The proposals could see residents and pupils at Charters School benefit from a wider range of leisure facilities including a swimming pool meaning they would no longer have to travel to access swimming facilities.”

The existing Charters Leisure Centre would remain in operation offering gym, sports hall and squash facilities during, and following the build.

If the planning application is approved, and subject to capital funding being agreed by Full Council, it’s hoped that new leisure centre would open by spring 2021.
