Hostile Vehicle Mitigation measures to be installed in Windsor Town Centre | Permanent Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) measures will be installed in Windsor to ensure the safety of residents.
In March 2017, temporary HVM measures were deployed in response to the Westminster attacks, but a permanent, integrated solution has now been identified.
The Royal Borough has been working with Thames Valley Police and specialist security consultants to develop the designs, and detailed assessment work has been undertaken at each location to determine the best position and type of HVM measures.
The design for each location is unique and has been designed with consideration of the conservation status of each area in mind.
Councillor Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for highways, transport and Windsor, said: “Keeping our residents safe is a top priority and these measures have been designed to ensure the safety of residents and those visiting Windsor. We are confident that the six designs fulfil that goal, while maintaining Windsor’s unique heritage.”
There are six locations the first phase will cover: ...
- Sheet Street; south of the entrance to Victoria Barracks
- Victoria Street; west of Sheet Street near to the pedestrian crossing
- Park Street; at the junction with Sheet Street
- Castle Hotel; at the High Street entrance to the parking yard
- Peascod Street; at the junction with the High Street
- Thames Street; by the junction with River Street
Installation of these safety measures is set to begin in summer 2019, and the Royal Borough has agreed to commit £942,000 towards the project, with Thames Valley Police committing £250,000.
Superintendent Colin Hudson, Local Police Area commander for Windsor & Maidenhead, said: “We want people who live, work and visit Windsor to feel safe, and these measures will help ensure that this is the case.”
