The younger pupils at Papplewick were entertained on Monday, 12th November when children’s author Laura James came to the school to talk to them about her books.

Laura was sure of the boys' attention right from the beginning when she gave them a selection of cowboy and pirate hats, sheriff badges and bandanas to wear – all of which feature in her stories of Pug.

After Laura had introduced the boys to two of her characters, Pug and Fabio, she read excerpts from her books. Probably the best part of the morning for the boys was when she asked them to think of creating their own characters for a mystery book. Headmaster Tom Bunbury said: “The results were certainly different - we had a hamster called Whizz who was in danger of being eaten by Archie the elephant but was saved by Bruno the detective!”

Fedoras and fun in Papplewick’s Bugsy Malone musical

Papplewick boys in Years 7 and 8 performed ‘Bugsy Malone’, from 29th November to 1st December for local schools, families and friends.

This gangster musical spoof, in which real guns are substituted by foam firing ‘splurge guns,’ is set in New York City in the early 1930s during prohibition. Rival gangs are vying for control of the nightclub scene and gun-smuggling, illicit alcohol production and a myriad other nefarious activities, associated with the New York gangster milieu, are in full swing!

The boys donned suits and fedoras, flapper dresses and cloche hats and had a lot of fun singing, dancing and acting out a stage version of Alan Parker's 1976 hit film.

Headmaster Tom Bunbury said: “Judging from the enthusiastic audiences and the generous applause, the show was a great success!”
