On 16th and 17th October, Year 7 students at Charters School in Sunningdale participated in African Drumming workshops run by Inspire Works.  The dynamic workshops were an excellent and flamboyant practical introduction to the energetic style of West African drumming, with students showing real interest and enthusiasm.

Inspire Works brought over 30 djembé drums which students used.  They were taught a traditional piece as practiced in West Africa, and there were opportunities for improvisation, solos, and development in ensemble playing.  Several other African drums are demonstrated as part of the workshop.

Mr Mike McKenna, Director of Music at Charters School said, ‘It is always really exciting when professionals visit Charters School and run these workshops. It’s been a fantastic experience for pupils who have enjoyed performing on authentic instruments and learning more about West African Drumming and its culture. They have already done some African Drumming in their lessons and it will be interesting to see how they progress following the workshop.’
